Can you learn Dutch by yourself?

“Dutch is way too hard. You really can’t learn it without a teacher.” If you’re an expat in the Netherlands, you’ve probably heard it more than once, and it may have taken the wind out of your sails immediately. Because what if you don’t have the time or the means to start Dutch lessons right now? Can you actually learn Dutch by yourself?  

The wrong start can make you think Dutch is impossible

To find the answer to the question ‘Can you learn Dutch by yourself?’, most expats decide on trying an app and binging some YouTube videos. But once they stall after a couple of weeks (and that’s more of a rule rather than an exception), they conclude that self-study doesn’t work for them. It’s a huge pity that one wrong choice early on causes so many expats to give up right away, because the actual answer to the question is: “Yes, you can learn Dutch by yourself.”

Self-study doesn't have to mean you're studying without guidance

Learning Dutch by yourself is absolutely possible, and reaching A2 level (solid, everyday Dutch) is realistic. But only -and this is an important prerequisite- if you follow a clear system instead of using a pile of random tools. Moreover, we should redefine what ‘by yourself’ means. Self-study Dutch: what usually goes wrong

But let’s go back to all those failed attempts for a bit, which you may have experienced yourself. Most of them look something like this:

  • Duolingo streaks for a few weeks, but then…. nothing.
  • A random grammar book abandoned around chapter 3.
  • YouTube videos that feel either like children’s TV or rocket science.


Most Dutch language learners who come to us report missing structure when they study Dutch independently. They have no idea what to do first, next, or later. Besides that, words and rules (without clear explanations) appear once and vanish, and there are no opportunities to actually use the language, i.e. speak or write Dutch. And last but not least, many people with a busy schedule need some kind of accountability. Unfortunately, a random grammar book or YouTube channel doesn’t notice when you slack off. It doesn’t take much for this kind of ‘self-study’ to fail.
