The CEFR framework

We measure language levels using the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR). The framework breaks down language proficiency into 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. It characterizes learners at A1 Dutch level as ‘basic users’, and states that this means ‘being able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help’.

At some point in your language learning journey, you may feel stuck, like you’re not making progress. This is called a learning plateau, and it can happen whether you’re learning Dutch by yourself or following private Dutch lessons with a tutor. While it’s a natural part of the process, it can be frustrating and makes it difficult to stay motivated to learn Dutch.

Progressing in Dutch isn’t always visible

Most students want to learn Dutch fast. But progressing in Dutch is not always a linear journey. Sometimes, it happens beneath the surface, much like the roots of a plant growing underground. You can get quite frustrated by this, because if you make an effort to learn something, you’ll most likely want to see the results of it as soon as possible. During plateau periods like these, it’s important to focus on long-term goals and trust the process. Remember that ‘ah-ha! moment’ in the shower? It proves that your brain is always busy, without you being aware of it. That means, you didn’t stop making progress, but you stopped making visible progress for a short period of time.

Spoiler alert: everyone will face a language learning plateau sooner or later. Although it can occur at any stage, it happens more and more as you progress in Dutch. When reaching an intermediate level, learning naturally slows down. The curve will simply not be as steep as in the beginning. Don’t let that get you down. Instead, try to look at it in a positive way: most of what you need to learn, you have already learned.

The good news is that a language learning plateau is never here to stay. The key to overcoming one is consistency and patience. With the right mindset and strategies, this phase will pass, and you’ll be back to making visible progress in no time.

Don't keep repeating the same

When progress slows down, it’s tempting to stick with what you already know. Many students who dutifully keep reaching for their books turn to repetition. Intrinsic motivation: I want to eat healthier because it gives me more energy during the day.

Extrinsic motivation: I want to eat healthier because my mom said it would be good if I lost some weight.

What do you think: which motivation type best helps this person stick to their healthy eating pattern?

Although the mom’s words may have an impact, the advice to lose weight doesn’t necessarily feel personally and emotionally relevant, because it’s not coming from the person themselves. External motivators

Intrinsic motivation is essential, but external motivators can also play a big role. Set deadlines with a tutor, or share your goals with friends or family so they can remind you of them. External accountability adds structure and keeps you on track. In Dutch, we call this ‘een stok achter de deur’ (lit. a stick behind the door). And what about treating yourself to rewards when you reach milestones? A reward can be as simple as that chocolate bar that calls your name every time you open the refrigerator.

Habit stacking

Incorporating language learning into your daily habits makes it more sustainable. Habit stacking is a method where you attach a new habit to an existing one. There’s an interesting phenomenon called synaptic pruning at the root of habit stacking, enabling your brain to conserve resources as it builds connections. It is much easier for your brain to learn two actions that happen simultaneously or sequentially than to learn two actions spread out. Examples of habit stacking are reviewing vocabulary while drinking your morning coffee or listening to Dutch podcasts during your commute.

Yet, every student knows how difficult it is to step out of their comfort zone. Even those who are the star of the language class and seem to absorb new grammar and vocabulary effortlessly like a sponge can find the change challenging. But by immersing yourself in Dutch situations and practicing with authentic materials, you can bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world and grow your language skills and confidence.

How can I incorporate Dutch into my daily life?

We often hear the question “How much time should I spend learning Dutch every day?” And as you might expect, learning Dutch requires daily commitment and creativity. Fortunately, that does not mean hours of daily studying. A little inventiveness and ten free minutes can go a long way. Chances are, you’re not exactly sure how to go about it. Even the smallest practice habits can be meaningful. Research suggests that achieving fluency takes time more than anything else. Practical tips to integrate Dutch into daily life

During your commute to or from work, listen to a Dutch podcast. There are so many of them, you are bound to find a podcast that suits your interests and language level.*
Time to go grocery shopping? Write your grocery list in Dutch. Of course, you can also write other to-do lists in Dutch. So get the post-its out!
Watch Dutch TV shows or the news for immersion in language and culture. Watch the NOS Journaal in Makkelijke Taal, for example. And through the website NPO Start (free) you can watch your favorite programs when it suits you. Note: don’t live in the Netherlands (yet)? From abroad you have limited access to the programs on the website.

Chances are you know many of the programs in your home country really well. When you live abroad, it can be difficult to figure out what suits your interests and level. Sitting down for a program every time only to conclude that it’s not your cup of tea can give you the feeling you’re wasting your time, which can be quite frustrating. A tutor can be of great help here, by recommending personalized resources, such as podcasts or TV shows that match your interests and proficiency level. This will make your Dutch practice sessions more relevant and enjoyable.

Key factor 2: creative ways to improve your Dutch

Off to the next key factor of effective language practice: engaging in creative activities that are interesting and relevant to you. You don’t have to make it harder on yourself than necessary; many of the exercises can be done within the walls of your own home. Here are some creative tips to learn Dutch at home:

If you’re into cooking, recipes can be a great way to help you get more used to the Dutch language. You learn a lot of words for ingredients and actions and, without being aware of it, become increasingly familiar with the Dutch sentence constructions.
Play some Dutch language games, such as crossword puzzles and word search games. Based on the number of stars, you can decide what level of difficulty you want to work with. Again, challenging yourself is good, but stay realistic. If you manage to unravel only two words in half an hour, you’re more likely to throw the word game in the trash than to actually learn something.

Speaking Dutch regularly is essential for improving fluency. But what are good conversation topics to learn Dutch? And how can you find someone to speak Dutch with? You have several opportunities, for example:

Signing up for a Taalmaatjes/Kletsmaatjes project. You will be paired with a language coach with whom you can practice your Dutch. Having (simple) conversations with Dutch-speaking friends, family, or colleagues. Tell them you are serious about learning the language and ask them to stick to Dutch.

While they usually do this to help you, learners often experience it as the exact opposite; completely unhelpful and frustrating. In that case, don’t hesitate to politely remind them. For example, by saying:

“Ik leer Nederlands. Ik wil graag oefenen.” (I’m learning Dutch. I would like to practice)

“Ik wil graag Nederlands spreken.” (I would like to speak Dutch please)

“Kunnen we Nederlands spreken? Ik wil de taal leren.” (Can we speak Dutch? I want to learn the language)

Learning Dutch with AI: a supportive tool or a standalone solution?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a development that can no longer be ignored. In fact, it’s developing at a very rapid pace, and is finding its way into more and more areas of daily life. Among many, this raises the question if learning Dutch with AI is also possible. Or to be more precise, whether learning Dutch with AI is as efficient as the creators of the models would like us to believe. After all, language models are advancing quickly, but how efficient are they?

At Dutch Ready, we are open to any developments that help students learn more effectively, so we decided to dive a little deeper into this topic. In this blog article, we’ll zoom in on AI language learning tools and their advantages and limitations when learning the Dutch language.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Not everyone follows all technological developments closely, so if this is not your area, let us quickly tell you what artificial intelligence is. Artificial Intelligence is a field of study that focuses on creating computer algorithms that can think and act like humans, so they can perform tasks that require human intelligence. Even if you belong to the group of people who are somewhat reluctant to use AI, you are actually using it far more often than you think. Think of everyday applications, such as:

voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant)
predicative texts in apps and search engines
personalized recommendations on Netflix, Spotify, social media, etc.
chatbots in customer service

Deep learning and Large Language Models (LLMs)

To better understand the AI models that claim they can teach you a language, you first need to know what deep learning is. Deep learning is a type of machine learning inspired by the structure and working of the human brain. It learns by analyzing data and identifying patterns without explicit programming. After training, the model can interpret new data and make predictions. The well-known language model ChatGPT is an example of this. GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer.

GPT’s don’t think, they predict

Generative models are specific applications of deep learning that are focused on creating new data. Almost all Large Language Models, i.e. models that are designed to understand human language, to generate human language and to react to it, are GPT’s. What they actually do is nothing more than determine the statistical probability based on an input. In other words, a GPT cannot think, it can only predict based on probabilities determined in the dataset it is trained on.

We probably all agree that we would rather work with a Dutch teacher who knows things and can think than with a teacher who can only make predictions. But let’s not completely depreciate what artificial intelligence can do in teaching Dutch before delving further into this.

Language learning tools: the current state of play, according to science

Recent research on the benefits and challenges of AI-learning tools reveals that there are indeed a number of advantages to learning a language with the help of an AI tool. When used as an addition to the traditional class, the tools can speed up the learning process and be of assistance to personalized learning. According to the same research, however, AI language learning tools cannot fully replace a tutor, because they lack human interaction, personalized feedback and cultural and contextual nuances. Moreover, they have been found to have limited ability to recognize errors, often create errors (also known as hallucinations) and aren’t able to produce original and creative language.

We actually know nothing yet about the long-term effects of learning Dutch with AI

When it comes to using AI-chatbots as a language learning medium, science seems to agree that AI language learning tools need further development and improvement. While chatbots are accessible and can help in reducing a learner’s anxiety, they often lack depth and adaptability. Moreover, their effectiveness is limited, with novelty wearing off over time.

With regard to communication skills specifically, it can be argued that chatbots can contribute to personalized learning experiences with their instant feedback, promoting the development of speaking and listening skills. However, further research is needed to determine the long-term effects. To date, research data is too limited.

Which popular tools are there to learn Dutch with AI?

Before enrolling in our language school for Dutch lessons, most of our students have already learned a few words using the famous green owl. DuoLingo is perhaps one of the best-known examples of AI language learning tools. It’s known for its gamified approach, but certainly no less for its weird phrases. Does ‘natte schildpadden hebben geen dorst’ (wet turtles are not thirsty) ring a bell to you? We are still contemplating in what situation this sentence might serve you well. Also, DuoLingo exercises are quite superficial and lack nuances. Other language learning tools that offer Dutch training are:

ChatGPT and learning Dutch

Because it goes too far to review all of the tools above in this blog, we decided to focus on the world’s most known chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT understands over 100 languages, leading numerous language learners to experiment with it. Free access is available, but you do need the paid version to get the most out of it. We took on the role of a Dutch learner ourselves and conducted some small experiments, practicing with the four classic skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Let’s take a look at the results.

Reading skills

The importance of practicing your reading skills is often underestimated. But the truth is, while reading, you can actually take the time to break down and internalize both grammar and vocabulary. No matter what language you’re learning. When you’re out of reading material, or when you’re unsure about what is suitable for your level, you could ask for the help of ChatGPT. You do that by using a prompt (textual message).

In our experiment, we used this prompt:

I’m a beginner in Dutch and only know the most common 300 words. Summarize the plot of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for me at a level I can understand.

This was ChatGPT’s output:

How did ChatGPT perform in the reading experiment?

Actually, the summary above looks quite good. The text does not contain unnecessarily difficult words and makes use of short sentences. In other words, ChatGPT can be of added value when practicing your reading skills. However, keep one thing in mind: when you learn with a tutor, they naturally also quiz you to check if you really understood. Together you can discuss difficulties and tricky words. Do you work with ChatGPT? Then don’t forget to ask the chatbot to quiz you as well. This is the only way to be sure that you really understood the text.

Writing skills

Let’s move on to the next possibility that ChatGPT offers you. When you’re learning Dutch with AI, you also need writing practice. For many students, writing is the least favorite part of learning a new language. A simple example is to write a piece of text and ask ChatGPT to correct it for you, using the prompt ‘Check this Dutch for me’.

In our experiment, we asked ChatGPT to correct this text (the underlined words are incorrect):

Ik heb een grote familie. Mijn ouderen heten Maria en Pedro en zijn 55 en 58 jaar oud. Ik heb ook een broer, hij Stefan heet en is 24 jaar oud. Iedereen wonen in Portugal. Mijn grootmoeder woont ook in Portugal en is 84 jaar oud. Ze is de moeder van mijn moeder. Mijn moeder heeft twee zussen, Dolores en Lourdes en hebben twee kinderen. Mijn vader heeft een jongere broer, maar hij heeft twee kinderen: een jongen en een mesje. Ze zijn mijn neef en nicht. Mijn neef is ouder van mij en mijn nicht is jongere.

How did ChatGPT perform in the writing experiment?

ChatGPT was able to correct all the mistakes in the written text and rewrote it flawlessly. What it doesn’t do, is explain to you why it does what it does. In other words, you don’t get any feedback on grammar, spelling, and word use. If it’s not clear to you why a mistake was actually a mistake, you can ask ChatGPT for clarification. We asked the model why it corrected ‘mijn nicht is jongere’ (the last words of the text) into ‘mijn nicht is jonger’. It gave us this answer:

Translation: Why incorrect? The word ‘jongere’ is a noun and means a young person (often a teenager), not an adjective. In this context, you want to use an adjective: ‘jonger’. Correction: The correct sentence is ‘Mijn nicht is jonger’. Here you use the adjective ‘jonger’, that belongs to the comparison.

Although ‘jongere’ is indeed also a noun, this is no explanation that helps us any further. Looking at how you composed the rest of the sentence, a tutor would have understood that it was your intention to use an adjective, not a noun. Your tutor also would have told you that the mistake lies in the fact that the adjective was written with an -e at the end, which we don’t do in Dutch when an adjective comes after the noun. ChatGPT’s explanation didn’t clarify that at all, meaning you’ll make limited progress.

Listening and speaking skills

When you’re learning Dutch, whether that’s with AI or or without, you’ll definitely want to work on your listening and speaking skills to be able to have daily conversations in Dutch. Could ChatGPT be of any help here? Of course we tried this out as well. To have conversations with ChatGPT, you’ll have to activate the advanced speech mode, which lets you choose from several voices. Instead of writing a prompt, now you speak to ChatGPT. A good spoken prompt could be:

‘I want to speak with you to practice my Dutch. Can we chat at a B1 level?’

The voice you chose will then invite you to tell it what you would like to talk about. We replied with ‘Hallo, kunnen we over katten praten?’ (Hello, can we talk about cats?)

ChatGPT replied to us with:

Hallo! Helaas kan ik niet direct met katten praten, maar ik kan je wel helpen met allerlei tips en informatie over katten! Wat zou je willen weten?
(Hello, unfortunately I can’t talk to cats directly, but I can help you with all kinds of tips and information about cats! What would you like to know?)

ChatGPT seemed to be a bit confused about prepositions here. ‘Praten over katten’ means ‘talking about cats’, and ‘praten met katten’ means ‘talking with cats’. Although ChatGPT’s reaction doesn’t cause a huge problem, it was at least a little funny.

How did ChatGPT perform in the listening and speaking experiment?

We then held a short conversation, in which a few things stood out:

The voices used are clear, but sound robotic. Speaking with ChatGPT definitely feels like speaking with AI instead of a real person. That means you don’t feel the connection you feel with a real conversation partner.
The emphasis is not always in the right place, while that’s essential to understand and convey the nuances of a message.
Some slight mistakes in pronunciation were made. For example, the first greeting ‘hallo’ sounded like the English ‘hello’ and instead of the Dutch word ‘of’, the English ‘if’ was audible. Remarkably, those errors were not visible in the written out script of the conversation that we got presented when we ended it. Pronunciation errors can be hard to unlearn and are often one of the biggest sources of miscommunication when learning.
Sometimes, ChatGPT may need some time to generate its answer. That may feel a bit unnatural.

Of course, we have only had a few brief conversations and cannot draw any firm conclusions. However, it is often said that the chats are generally a bit shallow. That doesn’t mean they’re useless, but it’s best to use them for short, simple practice. They could lose their value as you progress in learning Dutch. On the other hand, all the voices speak with the speed of a native speaker. That makes it more difficult for beginners.

The benefits of conversation practice with a tutor

Some students admit they feel a bit awkward in the beginning when starting online private Dutch lessons. Even though you know your tutor doesn’t expect you to have the skills of a native speaker, performance anxiety can play tricks on you. But that’s perfectly normal. And besides that, of course, you need some time to feel comfortable with a new person. If there is a good match between you and the tutor, that feeling will soon disappear and you can build a bond together. A tutor gets to know you and, based on that, can tailor your lessons even further.

Be aware of incorrect responses when learning Dutch with AI

It is well known that ChatGPT can give incorrect, biased or sometimes even offensive responses. In most cases, that’s the result of incomplete, outdated or biased training data. As you may know, ChatGPT is trained using information on the internet. And anyone with a keyboard and an internet connection can post information online. When a piece of misinformation occurs often enough, ChatGPT sees it as a valid pattern, and this leads to inaccuracies in its responses.

Furthermore, as ChatGPT essentially predicts the next part of a text, its predictions can simply be wrong. This means there will always be the risk of errors in output.

A tutor’s mindfulness of your cultural and personal values

Another negative consequence of the datasets used to train AI models: lack of proportional representation of different cultural, gender, or socioeconomic backgrounds.. When the output of the model does not match your religious, cultural or personal views, this can make you feel unaddressed or misunderstood as a learner and hinder the communication with the model. Needless to say, this doesn’t make your learning journey any more pleasurable.

How to improve your Dutch pronunciation?

When learning a language, pronunciation is one of the most important aspects to master. And Dutch is no exception to that. When you improve your Dutch pronunciation, you will make the difference between inefficient communication and a good conversation. Moreover, mastering pronunciation also means a boost in self-confidence and Dutchies being less likely to switch to English in conversation. That is why pronunciation, regardless of your language level, is always an important focus in a Dutch Ready NT2 Dutch course.

Time to break through the barrier

Have you ever tried to strike up a conversation or ask a question in Dutch, and the native speaker stared at you with a dazed look? Trying your best and feeling you’re very close to the correct pronunciation, but the other person not being able to understand, can be quite frustrating and even demotivating. Especially if your conversation partner switches to English instead of trying to speak with you in Dutch. Incorrect pronunciation can be a real barrier for people to easily understand you. When you practice your Dutch pronunciation, you’ll have this experience a lot less.

How difficult is Dutch pronunciation really?

How difficult a language is depends, among other things, on which languages you speak. The more the languages are similar, the easier it will be. For example, if you speak only Chinese, it will be a lot harder for you to practice and improve your Dutch pronunciation than if you (also) speak English. This also applies specifically to pronunciation. Do you speak English and/or German, or any of the other languages which, like Dutch, belong to the Germanic language family? Then it immediately becomes a lot easier for you.

Even the notorious Dutch g/ch sound, which to some sounds like choking, is actually quite common in some other languages. You can find it in words such as ‘jarrón’ (vase in Spanish), ‘хата’ (house in Russian), ‘góra’ (up in Polish), or even ‘Loch Ness’ (a well-known lake, in English).

Understanding Dutch phonetics

Especially for English speakers it is not too difficult to improve their Dutch pronunciation. Of course, that does not mean that it is always a walk in the park. Most learners find guttural sounds (the sounds made at the back of the throat, such as the g) quite a challenge, as well as some diphthongs such as eu and au and so-called pseudo diphthongs such as oei and eeu. We’ll come back to those troublemakers in a moment.
We do want to tell you one thing already: don’t let those ‘difficult’ sounds discourage you. Many students who skip pronunciation practice feel afraid to speak Dutch later on.

By the way, in this blog we take English as a starting point for comparison with the Dutch phonetic system because almost every expat masters this language. Dutch is a phonetic language

Like English, Dutch uses the Latin alphabet. So there’s no need to learn new characters. A second nice feature of our language is that it is quite phonetic. By this we mean that there is a strong relationship between spelling and pronunciation. In other words, once you are familiar with the sounds, you can easily deduce the pronunciation of a word from its spelling. This is much easier than in other languages like English or French, which are a lot less phonetically consistent. Just take the ea combination in English, which can be pronounced in numerous different ways:

Hear how the combination ei sounds the same in all words? No hidden surprises! So, when you improve your Dutch pronunciation by learning what each combination sounds like first, then you have already taken one of the first big steps.

Dutch vowels and consonants

All right, back to the Dutch alphabet and pronunciation. You can rejoice in the fact that the alphabet is the same one used in English. So that means 26 different letters, divided into vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and consonants. Let’s briefly review both vowels and consonants below.

Short and long vowels

If we take a look at the five separate vowels (a, e, i, o, u), we can say that they are often challenging for quite a few non-native speakers. This is because Dutch has more vowel sounds than many other languages. First off, in Dutch, we distinguish between short and long vowels. A single vowel is pronounced short, as for example in ‘bal‘ (ball), while double vowels, as in ‘kaas‘ (cheese), are pronounced long.

At first glance, perhaps nothing strange. But even a single vowel is often pronounced as a long vowel, for example, in words like ‘maken‘ (to make). Listen below how the words are pronounced:

So even a phonetic language still provides a surprise every now and then!

Improve your Dutch pronunciation by understanding sound stability

Let’s take a look at another example:

The single a in ‘maken’ sounds the same as the double aa in ‘maan’. This is due to a phenomenon that we at Dutch Ready call sound stability. The way we pronounce a vowel depends on the letters that come after it and the way words are split into syllables. It is something that is not covered in most Dutch pronunciation dictionaries, even though it is essential to get a good Dutch accent. Our Dutch Ready Pronunciation and Spelling Module therefore not only teaches you everything about the pronunciation of all Dutch sounds in itself, but also about when this phenomenon of sound stability occurs and why.

Vowel combinations

So Dutch has 5 different vowels (which can be pronounced long or short), but it doesn’t stop there, because we also have many vowel combinations, consisting of two or three vowels. These are pronounced (more or less) as one vowel: au, ei, eu, ie, ij, oe, ou, ui, aai, oei, ewe, ieu, eeu. Sometimes you also encounter ae, ai or oi, for example, in Mr. Spaenders, mais and hoi. These are all fixed combinations, with their own unique sound that you have to learn by heart. Luckily, once you know what each combination sounds like you won’t run into any surprises later. Consonants

If you want to sound more Dutch, then of course the consonants also need your attentian. Most Dutch consonants are pronounced roughly in the same way as English. Yet, also more than enough differences can be identified, such as:

In Dutch, the g is a guttural sound, that is, a sound made at the back of the throat. The same goes for the ch and the sch sound. So that explains the ‘hard’ g that Dutch is so famous (or infamous?) for.
The v is sometimes pronounced as f in Dutch, depending on exactly where it is in a word.
Dutch often applies the phenomenon of ‘sharpening of the end sound’. This means that a voiceless consonant at the end of a word is pronounced as voiced. For example, the word ‘hond’ sounds like ‘hont’.
Dutch speakers pronounce the r much more strongly than English speakers. Moreover, there are also different ways of pronouncing that letter, depending on its position in a word.

The most challenging Dutch sounds and how to pronounce them

A major learning goal of many students who enroll with us is to improve their Dutch pronunciation. We know from experience that a number of sounds can be a bit more challenging for a large proportion of learners. These include:

How could it be otherwise: the ‘hard’ g, a guttural sound made in the back of the throat: “Goedemorgen, ga je vandaag nog naar Groningen?” (“Good morning, are you still going to Groningen today?”)

Winkel / markt

We already gave you a quick tip, but don’t worry too much about that if you can’t master it. While in Groningen itself they use the ‘hard’ g a lot, in the southern part of the Netherlands they pronounce it much softer. Besides, with the right guidance, you’ll master this sound in no time! The r: depending on the place of r in a word, but also on the region, this letter is pronounced rolled or at the back of the mouth.
The diphthong ui: this combination does not occur in many other languages, which often makes it difficult to pronounce at first. The ui sound requires your mouth to be slightly open. The sound starts with the mouth shape of the short u sound and from the short u sound you continue to the long uu sound and then the j sound. The sound remains at the front of your mouth.
The uu: you can practice the pronunciation of this Dutch long vowel, that is made at the front of the mouth, by making your mouth very small. Just purse your lips, as if you were drinking from a straw.

Mistakes are part of the learning process

Common mistakes in Dutch pronunciation

Have you ever heard any of these pronunciation mistakes or perhaps made them yourself?

Oe sound instead of uu sound: “Vandaag gaan we koffie drinken bij de boeren” (“Today, we will have coffee with the farmers”) instead of “Vandaag gaan we koffie drinken bij de buren” (“Today, we will have coffee with the neighbors”).
And in the same category, “Ik moet mijn hoer nog betalen” (“I still have to pay my prostitute”) instead of “Ik moet mijn huur nog betalen” (“I still have to pay my rent”).
Confusion between short and long vowels, such as a and aa: “De maan draagt vandaag een mooi pak en een stropdas” (“Today, the moon is wearing a nice suit and a tie”) instead of “De man draagt vandaag een mooi pak en een stropdas” (“Today, the man is wearing a nice suit and a tie”)
Confusion between i and ie: “Ik eet vies met aardappelen“ (”I eat gross with potatoes“) instead of “Ik eet vis met aardappelen” (”I eat fish with potatoes”).

Our tips to help improve your Dutch pronunciation

Are you ready to practice your Dutch pronunciation further? These tips may be helpful:

Practice as much as possible with native speakers and ask them to correct you where necessary. With the help of our Praatgraag A1 and Praatgraag A2 dialogues, practicing pronunciation and conversation gets fun and easy.
Practice Dutch pronunciation with words you use often, so that you can apply what you learn. Our free Core Vocab list contains the 3000+ words that are most frequently used in spoken and written Dutch.
Listen to Dutch television, podcasts, radio, etc. The more often you hear the Dutch sounds, the more familiar you will become with them.
Try not to speak too fast, but give yourself time to focus.
Be aware of the differences between Dutch and your native language (see our extra tip below).
Focus on the shape of your mouth when practicing.
Before focusing on pronunciation, focus on recognition. This often helps a lot later.

When you’re a complete beginner, Dutch language level A2 is a good level to work towards when you want to chat more easily with coworkers, neighbors and other Dutchies, and fulfill your daily activities and obligations with greater ease. It’s this language level that makes communication in daily life much easier. But what exactly is the Dutch language level A2? Let us tell you more about it.

Dutch language level A2: the foundation for your future in the Netherlands

Even though the A2 level is known as the elementary stage, it plays a crucial role in helping you navigate daily life and integrate into Dutch society. At this level, you can handle basic conversations, whether you’re grocery shopping, using public transportation, or scheduling appointments. Besides, A2 is often essential for jobs in sectors like hospitality and customer service, where basic communication is key.

Moreover, when you decide to learn Dutch at A2 level, you will lay the foundation for future language development. This prepares you to progress to more advanced levels like B1 or B2. The CEFR Framework

Language levels are often measured using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This is a widely recognized system for evaluating language skills. The CEFR is a standardized framework that breaks down language proficiency into six levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Each level reflects a learner’s ability to use the language in real-life situations. The framework emphasizes four key skills:

Reception: reading and listening
Production: speaking and writing
InteractionI the ability to communicate effectively with others
Mediation: the ability to facilitate understanding and communication

What is A2 level, according to the CEFR?

The common reference level for A2, according to the CEFR, is stated as followed:

“Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Communicates in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.”

Reading, listening, writing and speaking

Want to learn Dutch A2? The four skills that the CEFR distinguishes might be new to you. Most learners are familiar with the classical division between reading, listening, writing and speaking. By adopting other modes of communication, the CEFR has moved away from these well-known classical skills as the base of describing language proficiency. As you may have noticed though, the four traditional skills are represented within the modes of communication. Reading and writing are covered by Reception, while speaking and writing are covered by Production. Furthermore, Interaction and Mediation are tested in language tests, but they are usually embedded within the traditional skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing, rather than being assessed as standalone categories.

Understanding Dutch language level A2 according to the CEFR Framework

But let’s go back to the question that you probably like to see answered most: what does it mean to reach the A2 language level in Dutch? In short, when you learn Dutch at level A2, you can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance. For example, you could think of personal and family information, shopping, surroundings, and employment. Practically, this means that you are able to:

participate in short and simple conversations;
ask and answer questions about familiar topics;
express personal needs in a straightforward manner;
understand short texts, provided that they are written in simple language.

Unlike higher level learners, A2 learners are still developing their fluency, but can already navigate simple social exchanges.

Skills at language level A2 compared to A1 and B1

Not sure if you should learn Dutch at A2 level? You’re not the only one. Oftentimes, we get asked what the difference between language level A1 and A2 is exactly, and what the difference is between language level A2 and B1. The main difference between language levels A1 and A2 lies in the range of expressions and tasks a learner can handle. Also, at A2 level, you rely a bit less on slowness of speech and support from your conversation partner. The difference between language levels A2 and B1 is marked by a transition from basic to more independent language use. At B1 level, you are able to express yourself more fluently and to navigate most daily situations at a pace that is reasonable to a native speaker.

To give you a clearer picture of what the Dutch A2 language level entails, the table underneath compares level A2 with A1 and B1 on each of the four classic competences.

In order to obtain an official diploma in Dutch language level A2, you are expected to have basic proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Dutch. Besides, for the Inburgering at A2 level you are also required to pass the KNM portion about Dutch history and culture. Below, we show you some examples of A2 language expressions, again compared to the levels A1 and B1.

want to take the Dutch A2 exam, so you can continue studying with full confidence for the next level.

Which exams test for Dutch language level A2?

There are two official exams that test for Dutch language level A2: the first one being the civic integration exam that we mentioned before, and the second one is the INFO-exam from CNaVT.

Civic Integration Exam

The civic integration exam is intended for non-EU nationals who wish to live and work in the Netherlands. It is a mandatory requirement for obtaining permanent residency or Dutch citizenship. Since January 1st, 2022, the test level to pass the exam changed from A2 to B1. That doesn’t apply (yet) to expats, for whom the exam is not mandatory. Are you an expat that wants to naturalize or obtain a permanent residence permit? For this reason, it’s smart to start your language learning journey and take the exam now that the A2 level still applies to you.

CNaVT (INFO)

The second official exam that tests for Dutch language level A2 is the INFO test from CNaVT (Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal). INFO stands for informeel, because the test is meant for those who want to speak with native speakers in Dutch society. CNaVT is commissioned by De Taalunie (Dutch Language Union) and the exams are developed by the Dutch Radboud University and the University of Leuven in Belgium. Note: the certificate is valid for two years.

How are answers scored in an exam?

In both the inburgeringsexamen (civic integration exam) and the CNaVT exam, answers are scored based on specific criteria that assess the learner’s ability to use the language effectively at the A2 level. The score is based on correct use of grammar and vocabulary appropriate to the A2 level, the production of simple sentences and the ability to extract key information from a simple text.

For the inburgeringsexamen, the passing score for most sections is typically 70-75%. For example, for the listening part of the exam you will need a minimum score of 18/25 and for the reading part a minimum score of 19/25.

Simple ways to improve your Dutch

Once you understand the exam format and the requirements to achieve an A2 level in Dutch, nothing should stand in your way to get started and work towards your goal. Dutch Ready is happy to help, so here are some practical tips if you want to learn Dutch at level A2:

Preparing for the inburgering examen is essential when you want to obtain a permanent residence permit or Dutch nationality. The Dutch civic integration exam, also known as inburgeringsexamen, is the exam you need to sit if you are looking to settle in the land of tulips, windmills and canals. The exam tests your knowledge of Dutch language and society. Just like you, thousands of people complete the integration exam every year. In this blog we will tell you everything you need to know about preparing for the inburgering examen and give you useful tips on how to study.

What is the civic integration exam or inburgeringsexamen?

Most people from outside the EU who want to live in the Netherlands for a long time, are obliged to learn about Dutch culture and language. The process you go through for this is called civic integration and ends with the so-called civic integration exam (in Dutch: inburgeringsexamen). After your arrival in the Netherlands, you have three years to go through the integration process and take the exam. You will receive a letter from Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) about this.

Preparing for the inburgering examen with guided lessons

You can decide for yourself how you want to prepare for civic integration: by taking group classes in civic integration or by studying independently. Group classes give you the opportunity to meet other people with whom you can practice the language. You don’t have that benefit when studying independently, but on the other hand, it does give you the flexibility to study at your own pace. It is also easier to combine your studies with other obligations this way.

For whom is the ‘inburgeringsexamen’?

Preparing for the inburgering examen or civic integration exam is important for non-EU nationals who wish to live and work in the Netherlands. It is a mandatory requirement for obtaining permanent residency or Dutch citizenship.

Three groups that are required to take the civic integration exam can be distinguished. Those are:

Asylum migrants: asylum status holders and their post-arrival family members.
Family migrants: migrants who have a Dutch spouse or partner.
Other migrants: migrants with a non-temporary humanitarian purpose of stay.

Who is exempt from the exam?

The civic integration requirement does not apply to everyone. As stated by the Dutch government, the following groups are exempt from the exam:

Citizens of EU countries, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland.
Individuals under the age of 18.
Individuals who have reached the retirement age.
People who have lived in the Netherlands for 8 years or more and were of compulsory school age in that period.
People who have degrees or other evidence that they followed education taught in Dutch (at an education institution in the Kingdom of the Netherlands).
People who come to the Netherlands temporarily for work, study or an exchange.

Expats and the civic integration exam

Are you an international student or expat in the Netherlands? In that case, you can be relieved. The integration requirement and inburgeringsexamen do not apply to you. Still, there may be reasons why you do want to naturalize or want a permanent residence permit. For example, you don’t have to renew your temporary residence permit every time, which can be very stressful. Also, more doors will open for you on the job market. You can then work for any employer and even start your own business in the Netherlands.

Level requirements for expats

Do you, as an expat, still want to take the civic integration exam for certain reasons? Then it’s smart to start preparing for the inburgering examen as soon as possible. Previously, all candidates had to meet level A2 according to the levels of the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). For those who are obliged to go through the process of inburgering, this has become level B1 since January 1, 2022. This does not yet apply to expats, but the question is for how long. After all, the political climate in the Netherlands is undergoing considerable change. Would you prefer not to have to take the more difficult B1 exam in the future? You can avoid this by taking the A2 exam as soon as possible. You can then also decide for yourself how you want to study.

Where do you take the inburgering examination?

You can take the civic integration exam at various locations across the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Zwolle. The exams are administered by DUO. In some cases, civic integration starts before you come to the Netherlands. For example, when you want to join your partner who already lives there. If you are taking the exam abroad, you will need to visit a Dutch embassy or consulate. Both procedures require you to register in advance and provide necessary identification.

The costs

The civic integration exam consists of several sections, which are:

Knowledge of Dutch Society (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij (KNM))
Language Exam
- Reading (Lezen)
- Writing (Schrijven)
- Speaking (Spreken)
- Luisteren (Listening)

Each exam component costs €50. So in total, you pay €250 to take the entire exam.

Some people also have to take a sixth exam component: Orientation to the Dutch Labor Market (Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt (ONA)). This is mandatory for anyone who became subject to the civic integration requirement after January 1, 2015. This exam costs €40.

What language level do you need for inburgering?

Are you an expat? For now, to pass the civic integration exam, you must achieve an A2 level in Dutch. The CEFR levels range from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). As a speaker on A2 level, you are a beginning speaker. You understand simple language and can have short, clear conversations about familiar topics from everyday life, such as work and family.

What happens if you fail?

Preparation is key to passing the civic integration exam. If you fail a section, you can retake it as many times as necessary. However, you must register with DUO again and pay for each retake separately. The results of the sections you’ve already passed will remain valid, so you only need to focus on the parts you didn’t pass.

Learning Dutch in your sleep

Fact or Fiction?

Going to bed at night and waking up a Dutch genius. Learning in your sleep; it sounds like a scene from a science fiction movie. Too good to be true right? Well, depending on how you ask the question, there’s actually some truth to it. It all has to do with how the brain works and how it stores new information.

Learning without studying?

There have been some amazing stories over the years of people waking up from a coma, suddenly being able to speak or understand a language, at a level that they never had before.

Ben McMahon for instance, had only learned some basic Mandarin in high school. Yet, after waking up from a week-long coma, he was suddenly fully fluent. Even completely forgetting his native English for a few days. The event still baffles neuroscientists to this day. However, a coma might not be a particularly practical way to tackle language learning.

Aside from anecdotal evidence, there has been proper neuroscientific research into learning during sleep as well. However, all of these studies seem to conclude one thing: yes, you can learn during your sleep. But no, it can’t be something you don’t know yet. That sounds contradictory, right? Learning something you already know? How does that make sense?

Learning what you know already

Well, what does it mean to learn something? Is that just seeing the information, or is it actually remembering that information later? I’d argue the latter. So, in a way, learning something always means you’re not just processing new information. You’re making that information accessible later as well. A large part of this learning process actually involves information you already know. Because your brain requires starting points in order to remember information.

Understanding how the brain actually ‘learns’, how it selects and stores new information, will help speed up your Dutch learning dramatically. And yes, that has a lot to do with sleep.

Your brain never sleeps

Your brain stores new information by making connections. Every new thing you learn, you only learn in relation to something else you already know. That’s why learning something new often takes longer in the beginning. You don’t have any other information to relate it to. It’s all new. As you know more and more about something, you can start seeing how things relate to each other. This means your brain is able to make more connections, and so better store that new information.

When you learn your first few Dutch words, they might sound and look strange to you. As you learn more and more of them and practice your Dutch pronunciation, you start seeing similarities in sound, spelling or meaning. This makes it easier to remember the new words because you can relate them to something you already know.

For this reason, you’ll often hear the advice of working with mnemonics when studying vocabulary. Mnemonics are memory devices that help you learn new information, often based on sound or meaning. For instance, knowing that the Dutch word for mnemonic, ‘ezelsbruggetje’, oddly translates to ‘donkey bridge’, makes it easier to remember. Actually, mnemonics are nothing more than a way to increase the connections you’re able to make with a new piece of information. And more connections means easier learning. The same is true for all other aspects of language, even grammar.

The hippocampus, in particular, is a brain region tasked with trying to remember everything that happens. As you go about your day, your hippocampus is storing all kinds of information this way, non-stop. Like what you had for breakfast, some new Dutch words you learnt, or the name of that tv-show your friend recommended. Even small things, like where you put your keys are (usually) stored in memory. Once you go to sleep, all that seems like it might stop. But it doesn’t.

Interestingly enough, the brain remains fully active during sleep, even if that activation looks a little different. During sleep, your brain isn’t focused on making new connections. Instead, your brain is deciding which connections to keep. So essentially, what to remember. It strengthens some connections while discarding others. We call this process memory consolidation, and sleep is critical for it to work properly. During sleep, your hippocampus actually replays all the information it stored before. As it does so, it connects that information to other parts of your brain, slowly moving what you learned out of the hippocampus to make room for new information. Any information that’s not critical isn’t moved to the rest of your brain, but simply deleted instead.

Why do you remember something?

There are two factors that are especially important for your brain when it comes to deciding what information to keep, and what information to discard. Namely; how recently something occurred, and how well connected that new information is.

Recency is important because it has to do with continuity. Something you’ve recently encountered is more likely to be used in the near future. If you already forgot the previous sentence, it’s hard to make sense of the next one. Forget where you fell asleep and you’ll wake up in a panic. The longer you go without re-using the information, the less likely you are to remember it. That’s why you can’t remember what you had for breakfast on Tuesday two weeks ago. Yet, you should have no trouble remembering what you ate this morning.

Likewise, if new information is well connected, it often means it is relevant to you personally. After all, it can only connect to something you already remember. The more things it can connect to, the better it fits into your existing knowledge. If you learn something new about a completely random topic, you won’t be able to form a lot of connections. But then again, you most likely won’t need it anymore. However, if you learn something new at work, you can immediately understand why it’s valuable, and how you can use it. You automatically connect the new information to existing information.

Learning Dutch while you sleep

So here’s the great thing, you can actually make use of both of those factors (recency and connectivity) when you’re studying vocabulary. And by doing so, you’ll learn new words much faster than you would otherwise.

First off, make sure you’re getting the benefits of sleep consolidation. This means thinking about how your study schedule interacts with your sleep schedule. Try studying vocabulary in the evening before bed, so that the information is recent. That way it has a higher chance of being consolidated. Self-study using an e-learning module Dutch can come in handy here, because it gives you complete control over when you study. Not really an evening learner? Try taking a short nap (at least 20 minutes) after learning some new words to still get the benefits that sleep brings. It would be a shame to lose your progress because you still have the rest of the day in between. Like we discussed before, recency is important. Don’t let your hard work go to waste.

Additionally, make sure the information is well connected. Don’t just study word lists by themselves. Try to make associations, sound out words, and write them down. Create mnemonics for words you have difficulty with. The more visual and personal the connections are, the better you’ll be able to remember them. You want to try and connect each new word in as many different ways as possible. That way the new information has the best chance of being consolidated.

Finding flow in language learning

Optimal flow, also known as the “flow state,” is a state of peak performance in which an individual is fully immersed and focused on the task at hand. Research has shown that experiencing optimal flow can lead to increased productivity and motivation, as well as a deeper sense of satisfaction and enjoyment. In the realm of language learning, achieving the flow state can have significant benefits, including faster acquisition of new skills and a greater retention of information. By understanding how to enter and maintain the flow state, language learners can optimize their study sessions and ultimately improve their overall progress and success in learning a new language.

Optimal flow was first described in the 1970s by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Csikszentmihalyi, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field of psychology. The term optimal flow was recently brought back into the public eye with his book “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience”.

Proof Flow Works

Neuroscientific research has shown that the flow state is not just a psychological experience, but is also accompanied by tangible changes in brain activity such as:

Increased activity in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for focus and attention, as well as decreased activity in the default mode network, which is associated with self-related thoughts and distractions (Tang et al., 2015).
Increased connectivity in the brain, leading to improved learning and problem solving (Jung et al., 2010).
Increased release of dopamine and other neurotransmitters that facilitate learning and memory consolidation (Jackson & Csikszentmihalyi, 1999).
Increased production of endorphins, which can lead to feelings of pleasure and enjoyment (Jackson et al., 2013).

In other words, during flow you’re more tuned in, better able to relate and remember new information, and enjoying the learning process to boot.

These neurophysiological changes can lead to improved learning and performance in a variety of tasks, including language learning (Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi, 2014). For instance:

Individuals who experienced a flow state while learning have significantly increased motivation, language performance, and language learning strategies compared to those who do not experience flow (Li, 2003).
Flow significantly improves oral proficiency (MacIntyre, Clément, Dörnyei, & Noels, 1998).
Flow leads to increased retention and comprehension of new vocabulary (Dunlosky & Metcalfe, 2013).

Why Does Flow Work?

So, why does optimal flow lead to improved language learning? One reason may be that it allows learners to fully engage with the material, rather than becoming distracted or disengaged. Optimal flow can also increase motivation and persistence, leading to more consistent and dedicated practice.

Additionally, the flow state triggers many chemical changes in the brain that help create connections, retain information, and recall it again later. Which means that all that extra focus and motivation has an even bigger impact.

The state is characterized by a feeling of effortless concentration and enjoyment. No wonder individuals who experience optimal flow are more likely to engage in activities for longer periods of time and to perform at their best.

How to achieve flow?

To achieve a flow state in language learning, it is important to find an activity that is engaging and challenging, but not overly difficult. Ideally, the difficulty of what you are trying to learn is just outside your comfort zone. Meaning, it is still something you struggle with, but it isn’t so new or challenging that it’s overwhelming.

Is the material too easy? You’ll likely lose interest as your progress stalls. Make it too hard, and you’ll be likely to quit in frustration. In essence, you need to find the perfect balance between ease and difficulty, comfort and discomfort. By materials, by the way, we don’t necessarily mean a textbook.
