Time to ‘get them under the knee’! Proverbs are an important part of the Dutch language

Just like in other languages, Dutch contains many proverbs. These types of expressions have been an essential part of the Dutch language for centuries. During the Golden Age, for instance, proverbs were widely used. Not only to convey wisdom, but also to entertain. At that time, many people were illiterate, and proverbs served as a way to remember bits of folk wisdom.

Some artists even got creative with proverbs. Take painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder, for example, who created a now-famous village scene hiding over 100 proverbs in it! These days, Dutch proverbs aren’t quite as prominent in the language as they once were. They are still used, of course, but less frequently than in the past. This is partly because people today can express themselves better in both writing and speech.

Typical Dutch proverbs explained: what you can expect

Many of the most commonly used Dutch proverbs are uniquely Dutch in origin, but some come from other languages, such as English. Are you an expat and eager to learn more about Dutch proverbs? 1. De appel valt niet ver van de boom

Literal translation: The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Meaning: A child resembles their parent(s), either in appearance or personality. You use this when someone clearly takes after their mother or father.

2. Nu komt de aap uit de mouw

Literal translation: Now the monkey comes out of the sleeve.

Meaning: The truth comes out; the real situation is finally revealed. People say this when something hidden becomes clear.

3. Beter een vogel in de hand dan tien in de lucht

Literal translation: Better one bird in the hand than ten in the air.

Meaning: It’s better to appreciate and keep what you already have than to take risks and end up with nothing.

4. Iets onder de knie hebben

Literal translation: To have something under the knee.

Meaning: To master something; to be skilled at something. It means you’re good at something because you’ve practiced or learned it well.

5. Met de deur in huis vallen

Literal translation: To fall into the house with the door.

Meaning: To get straight to the point without any introduction. This is a typically Dutch expression. After all, Dutch people are known for being direct.

6. Door de mand vallen

Literal translation: To fall through the basket.

Meaning: Someone is exposed as a fraud or liar. It refers to someone being found out for who they truly are.

7. Wie zijn billen brandt, moet op de blaren zitten

Literal translation: He who burns his buttocks must sit on the blisters.

Meaning: If you make a certain choice, you have to deal with the consequences. You are responsible for your own actions.

8. Een uiltje knappen

Literal translation: To snap (or nap) a little owl.

Meaning: To take a short nap, especially during the day to recharge. The literal version sounds strange, but it’s a sweet and playful way of saying “take a quick nap”.

9. Het is water naar de zee dragen

Literal translation: It’s like carrying water to the sea.

Meaning: Putting effort into something pointless or unnecessary. It describes a task that’s a waste of time and energy.

10. Het gras is groener bij de buren

Literal translation: The grass is greener at the neighbor’s.

Meaning: Things always seem better elsewhere. People often feel that others have it better, though that may not be true.

So don’t be thrown off if you hear someone say they’re “going to catch a little owl” or “fall into the house with the door”. Changes to the Dutch civic integration exam

The status quo in 2025 and how to best prepare yourself

You may have heard that in 2025, a number of important changes were made to the Dutch civic integration exam. The speaking exam at level A2, and the KNM exam now have a new format. This has created a wave of uncertainty among those preparing for their future in the Netherlands. Previously, this may not have seemed particularly relevant to you. But if your exam date is approaching, you may be thinking about it differently now. In this blog article, we’ll walk you through this year’s changes, and tell how you can optimize your preparation, so you can step into that exam room with total confidence.

First things first: which civic integration exam do you need to sit?

Do I need to take the civic integration exam at level A2 or B1? It was (and still is) a frequently asked question that caused a lot of uncertainty and confusion. If you are obligated to integrate, the integration exam level required in the Netherlands depends on your personal situation. Although the B1 requirement applies to a large part of the group that falls under the Civic Integration Act 2021 (Wet Inburgering 2021), it’s not necessarily the standard. The municipality determines which learning route you will have to follow. The old Civic Integration Act 2013 continues to apply to people who already fell under the civic integration requirement before 1 January 2022. Under this old act, the required language level for integration is A2.

The current situation for expats

But what about expats who are not obligated to integrate, but do want to apply for naturalization? CEFR level A2 has applied to them for years. Rumours were that it would change to B1 from July 1, 2025, but until now that has not yet taken effect. We have no insight into when this will change, so the best advice for expats who want to apply for a Dutch passport is to take the A2 exam as soon as possible.

Changes to the Dutch civic integration exam: the speaking part

From March 1, 2025, the speaking part of the A2 exam has changed. The total number of exercises has been reduced from 24 to 16, which need to be answered in 35 minutes. The new exam is split into 4 sections. In section 1, someone asks you a question in a short video and you need to reply. This is the same as in the old version of the exam, but there are fewer questions. In section 2-4 you will see 1-3 pictures and need to answer a question about those pictures. This is a more practical, more logical, and ultimately more fair method of evaluation.

A detailed breakdown of the new speaking format

To succeed, it’s essential to understand the structure you will face. The changes to the Dutch civic integration exam have led to a new exam format that’s divided into four distinct parts, each designed to test a different aspect of your communication skills.

For questions 1 through 4, you’ll be shown a short video. After watching, you’ll be asked a question about what you saw. The key here is to respond directly to the content of the video, using the right vocabulary to describe the situation or answer the query.
The format shifts to an image for questions 5 through 8. You’ll see a picture and you’ll be asked a simple question about the image and often also an elaborating question.
For questions 9 through 12, you’ll be presented with two different images. Again, you’ll get a two-part question, but this time you have a choice. You often need to choose one of the pictures and explain why.
Finally, for questions 13 through 16, you will see three pictures at once. Your task here is to say something about all three of them.

Embrace the chaos of the exam room

All exam components (except the writing exam on level A2), are taken on the computer. This means you’ll also take the oral exam on the computer, and that will not be in a silent, isolated booth. Instead, you will be in a room with other candidates, all speaking at the same time. This can be incredibly distracting if you are not prepared for it. It’s best to train for these conditions, in order to build your mental resilience and your ability to focus amidst this chaos. The KNM exam's shift from behavior to knowledge

Changes to the Dutch civic integration exam have also been made to the KNM part. The Knowledge of Dutch Society, or in Dutch: ‘Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij’ (KNM) exam has undergone a critical transformation that took effect on July 1, 2025. The focus has shifted away from testing expected behavior to testing factual knowledge. This is a crucial distinction. The old exam might have asked how you should act in a certain situation. The new exam asks if you know the facts about that situation. For example, instead of testing your ability to congratulate someone on their birthday, the exam now tests if you know that congratulating someone is a common custom in the Netherlands. In other words: the new exam is less about prescribed behavior and more about factual knowledge and understanding how Dutch society actually works.

New critical topics you have to master

This update also introduces several important new themes that are highly relevant to modern life in the Netherlands. You’ll now find topics such as the Holocaust and the importance of recognizing anti-Semitism explicitly included. The exam also emphasizes that in the Netherlands, the law always takes precedence over religious or cultural rules, a cornerstone of the Dutch constitutional state. Another crucial addition is the inclusion of a woman’s right to self-determination, highlighting the principle of individual autonomy and equality.

Practical knowledge for modern Dutch life

Beyond these significant societal topics, the new KNM exam incorporates practical knowledge essential for daily life. Digital literacy is now a key component. You must know what a DigiD is, how to log in securely to government websites, and understand the importance of online privacy. These are not optional skills; they are necessary for interacting with official bodies in the Netherlands. The exam also covers practical healthcare knowledge. For instance, you should know the role of a practice support worker (POH) at a GP’s office and when to contact them. This knowledge empowers newcomers to navigate the Dutch healthcare system more effectively and independently.

The timeline is non-negotionable

If civic integration is obligatory for you, you have three years to complete the entire civic integration process from the moment you receive your official letter from DUO. This is not a flexible deadline. And that means the pressure is on. This timeline demands a proactive and structured approach to your studies, as well as a thorough preparation for the exam itself.

Before we start

We often get questions like ‘How difficult is Dutch grammar?’ and ‘How easy is it for English speakers to learn Dutch grammar?’ from language learners. Although the opposite is often claimed, Dutch is actually quite an easy language to learn. Practice, exposure and using the right Dutch learning materials are key. Dutch is a member of the Germanic language family, which means you will pick it up even easier if you already speak English and/or another Germanic language like German.

Use your native language to master the basic Dutch grammar rules faster

Also, did you know that your native language can help you learn a new language? Understanding the similarities and differences between your native tongue and Dutch speeds up the language learning process. Research demonstrates the importance of insight into the mother language over and over again.

The Dutch articles: de, het, een

First, let’s start with the articles. Dutch has two definite articles, that you use to identify a specific noun: ‘de’ and ‘het‘. So we started off with some pretty good news, because there are fewer articles in Dutch than in, say, German, French, Spanish, Greek, or Italian. The less good news? Whereas many other languages have clear rules about when to use which article, Dutch is a bit more of a mystery.

Learning Dutch articles by heart

The Dutch language has two definite articles, or articles we use for a specific, particular, or known noun. We use the article ‘de’ for masculine and feminine words, and ‘het’ for neuter words. So, how do you know if it’s ‘de’ or ‘het’ in Dutch? Although there are some rules that can help you decide which article to use (for example, words for plants, fruits, and vegetables are de-words), it eventually comes down to learning them by heart, just like the native speakers had to. So whenever you learn a new noun in Dutch, learn its article immediately as well. That means your vocab list should kind of look like this:

de kat (the cat)

het huis (the house)

de tafel (the table)

het boek (the book)

However, the good thing is that there are a few simple rules. The definite noun in plural always has the article ‘de’: de katten, de huizen, de tafels, de ramen. Diminutives always get the article ‘het’, except when you use them in plural, because then, like all other nouns, they also get the article ‘de’. These are actually one of the easiest basic Dutch grammar rules. Take a look:

After a while, you will find that you begin to sense which article sounds right with which noun.

The indefinite article ‘een’

Fortunately, the situation is a lot simpler when you need an indefinite article, or an article that you use to introduce a non-specific noun. That is always ‘een’: een kat, een huis, een tafel, een raam. In plural, there’s no indefinite article: katten (cats), huizen (houses), tafels (tables), ramen (windows).

Making mistakes with the Dutch articles

Although nobody gets hurt when you use a wrong article, it’s still important to learn them. After all, you’ll need this knowledge in a host of other grammatical situations. The table below illustrates that.

The Dutch plural

Now that you have read the above information about articles, you know that the article for the plural is always ‘de’. But now let’s have a look at the plural form of the nouns themselves. You can divide the plural forms into three major groups:

nouns with a plural ending in -en
nouns with a plural ending in -s
nouns with a plural ending in -‘s

Plurals ending in -en

In most cases, we form the plural by adding the suffix -en to the singular word.

het boek (the book) – de boeken

de kat (the cat) – de katten

het huis (the house) – de huizen

You can see that there is a spelling change for some plural forms. For example, the plural form of ‘kat’ gets a double ‘t’ and the plural form of ‘huis’ has a ‘z’ instead of an ‘s’. This has to do with the pronunciation of words. We won’t go into more detail about this spelling system in this blog post because it is quite detailed. Would you like to learn more? Plurals ending in -s

The second category involves nouns ending in -e, -el, -em, -en, or, -er. These words get the suffix -s. Have a look at these examples:

de lepel – de lepels

het meisje – de meisjes

de jongen – de jongens

Plurals ending in -'s

Finally, nouns that end in a single a, i, o, u, y get -‘s in their plural form. The apostrophe is there to show that we should keep the pronunciation of that vowel long. For example:

de paraplu – de paraplu’s

de auto – de auto’s

de pyjama – de pyjama’s

Dutch adjectives

Time to move on to the adjectives. If you already learned a little Dutch for beginners, these examples will probably be familiar to you:

groot (big), mooi (beautiful), klein (small), lekker (tasty), interessant (interesting), groen (green), vies (dirty), snel (fast), lief (sweet), goedkoop (cheap)

You may also have noticed that adjectives often end in an -e, so ‘mooie’ instead of ‘mooi’ and ‘kleine’ instead of ‘klein’. Why is that?

When we want to describe a definite (specified) noun, the adjective always gets an -e. For instance: ‘mijn mooie auto’ (my pretty car), ‘deze lekkere taart’ (this tasty pie), ‘het goedkope brood’ (the cheap bread), ‘de kleine kinderen’ (the small children). Hence, the article doesn’t play any role here; the rule applies to both de-words and het-words.

When the article does play a role is when we want to describe an indefinite (unspecified) noun. We then talk about ‘een mooie auto’ (de auto) and ‘een goedkoop brood’ (het brood). The adjectives to indefinite de-words again get an -e, but the adjectives to indefinite het-words do not.

There is one other situation where the adjective does not get an -e, and that is when it’s not in front of the noun, but when it comes later in the sentence. We added examples of this in the overview below.

Stressed and unstressed pronouns

Let’s move on to the next in line of basic Dutch grammar rules. The difference between stressed and unstressed pronouns tends to stress some Dutch learners. Before we dive into that, let’s have a look at the difference between English and Dutch. After all, language comparisons are always a good way to approach new grammar, and they’ll help you develop your Dutch language skills way faster.

English:

Hey, how are you?
- I’m doing great, thanks. How are you?

Dutch:

Hoi, hoe gaat het met je?
- Het gaat goed, bedankt. Hoe gaat het met jou?

Did you notice that the Dutch counter-question uses a different form of the pronoun than the first question? ‘Je’ is an unstressed pronoun and ‘jou’ is a stressed pronoun. In contrast to the English counter-question, where stress is added by simply pronouncing the pronoun with emphasis, in Dutch, you need a different form of the pronoun to do this.

However, not all pronouns have an emphasized form. Have a look at this overview (the pronouns in bold are emphasized). The pronouns without this stressed form are emphasized by pronouncing the word with extra emphasis, just like in English.

The present tense

Are you just starting to learn Dutch? The first tense that you come across is the present tense. That is the tense we use to talk about the present, and that can also be used to talk about the future. Let’s see how it is formed. The vast majority of Dutch verbs have an infinitive ending in -en. Think about ‘werken’ (to work), ‘slapen’ (to sleep), ‘fietsen’ (to cycle), ‘eten’ (to eat), and ‘stoppen’ (to stop). Some verbs have a different form, such as ‘gaan’. For convenience, we will use a verb ending in -en in the example below: ‘werken’.

To start, you’ll need the stem of the verb. You’ll find the stem by taking -en from the infinitive. In the case of the verb ‘werken’ that would be: werken – en = werk.

Note: whenever the subject and the verb switch places (which we’ll tell more about in the next section), the verb doesn’t get a -t when je or jij comes after it. For example:

Je werkt in Amsterdam.

Werk je in Amsterdam?

Changing the stem of a verb

Sometimes we have to change the stem of the verb before we can conjugate. It’s one of the basic Dutch grammar rules that have to do with pronunciation again. We change the stem of the verb when it ends in a single vowel that sounds long, and when it ends in a double consonant. Take a look:

slapen (sla-pen)	slaap (instead of slap)	The ‘a’ in ‘slapen’ sounds long, because it’s in an open syllable. The stem of the verb is a closed syllable, ending in a consonant. We have to add a second a to maintain the long sound.
stoppen (stop-pen)	stop (instead of stopp)	A double consonant at the end of the stem isn’t audible. In other words: we don’t need it.

As soon as these verbs have more than one syllable, like in the plural form, these changes are undone. Take another look:

Also, when ‘z’ is the last letter of the stem of a verb, we change it into ‘s’. We also change the ‘v’ into ‘z’. That’s how the stem of ‘lezen’, for example, becomes ‘lees’, and the stem of ‘geven’ becomes ‘geef’.

The Dutch word order: the most difficult part of basic Dutch grammar rules?

Honesty is the best policy. So, we will admit to you that there are few people who immediately find the Dutch word order logical. But although the syntax is different from that of most other languages, fortunately there are straightforward rules that keep things clear. Dutch is a so-called SVO (subject-verb-object) language. Take a look at the examples below:

Ik kook de pasta (I cook the pasta)

Hij repareert zijn fiets (He repairs his bicycle)

It’s important to know that, unlike some other languages, such as Spanish, Italian, and Greek, a Dutch sentence always needs an explicit subject, otherwise it’s not complete.

And are you adding another verb to the sentence? In that case, the main verb moves to the end of the sentence in its infinitive form. The first verb in the sentence is always conjugated to match the subject. For example:

Ik wil de pasta koken (I want to cook the pasta)

Hij moet zijn fiets repareren (He has to repair his bicycle)

Inversion in a Dutch sentence

Finally, inversion can also occur, and is one of the basic Dutch grammar rules that you’ll apply pretty quickly. It means that the subject and the finite verb switch places, but they will still always be next to each other. Inversion is needed when you don’t start your main clause with the subject. You can see the difference in the example below:

Ik heb nu tijd. (I have time now)

Nu heb ik tijd. (Now I have time)

Inversion also occurs when we ask a question, regardless of whether we use an interrogative (question word):

Ga je morgen naar Amsterdam? (Are you going to Amsterdam tomorrow?)

Hoe ga je morgen naar Amsterdam? (How are you going to Amsterdam tomorrow?)

Our tips to master basic Dutch grammar rules

1. Immerse yourself

By nature, our brains try to make sense of the world around us. This means that consistent immersion in the language will naturally help you absorb grammar without drills. While explanations of basic Dutch grammar rules can get you started, the real work happens when you focus on applying them through activities like conversations and use of media.

Taking out an entire evening to spend hours studying isn’t only a boring prospect, but also something that’s actually not that effective at all. The success of your learning efforts isn’t in how long you study in a row, but in regularity.

4. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

Are you afraid to speak Dutch? The only way to overcome this feeling is exposure. Like anything in life, nothing is perfect. And even native speakers make mistakes. Nobody is out to criticize you. Although it can feel like there is never a good time to speak Dutch, every moment is in fact an opportunity. Build it up slowly by starting off with a short conversation with a friend or neighbor. Or speak Dutch with store staff. Have you gotten used to that? Then take the next step, such as a chat with a colleague or speaking some Dutch with your doctor.

5. Make use of your own interests

Learning Dutch becomes so much more fun and doable when you can apply it immediately and/or connect it to your interests. Are you practicing the conjugation of verbs? Then choose verbs that are important to you, for example, because they have to do with your work or hobbies, or because you want to discuss something with your children’s teacher.

Before we move on to our practical tips to learn A1 Dutch online, let’s take a look at a question we often receive first: ‘What is A1 Dutch level?’ The short answer is that A1 Dutch level is the beginners level, which enables you to interact with others in a basic way. Some can-do’s are:

using basic greetings and introducing yourself
telling a bit about yourself and your family
talking about daily activities
talking about hobbies, favorite foods, the weather, and other common topics
making appointments and reservations, and filling in simple forms

In other words: learning Dutch at A1 level means that you’ll be able to communicate in everyday situations, using elementary vocabulary and common expressions.

The CEFR framework

We measure language levels using the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR). The framework breaks down language proficiency into 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. It characterizes learners at A1 Dutch level as ‘basic users’, and states that this means ‘being able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help’.

How long does it take to learn A1 Dutch online?

How long it takes to learn A1 Dutch online depends on several factors:

Your native language
Your command of related languages, like English or German
Your experience with language-learning
The time you have to study Dutch

“You’re in a store, ready to ask the question in Dutch that you’ve practiced so many times. But then it happens: a sudden mental block. The fear of messing up feels overwhelming. In the end, you leave the store with the whole grain bread you needed, but without the positive experience you had hoped for. You switched back to English, or communicated in a language that you believe most resembled spoken stenography. Now what?”

Living in the Netherlands can be an incredible experience, but if you’re an expat who’s still learning the language, it might feel like a rollercoaster of excitement and anxiety. Being afraid to speak Dutch can affect your confidence, cultural integration, and social interactions. Whether you’re nervous about mispronouncing words, unsure of grammar, or afraid of raised eyebrows as soon as you open your mouth, you’re not alone. Many expats share this same fear of speaking Dutch.

In this blog, we’ll explore why many expats are afraid to speak Dutch, and, most importantly, provide you with some of the most practical solutions to overcome your fear. Because, as with everything, fear really is your very worst advisor.

Common reasons why people have a fear of speaking Dutch

It’s not just you - here’s why it feels so hard

At Dutch Ready, we’ve been teaching Dutch for years. Trust us, fear of speaking Dutch is something that a large part of our students deals with at some point during their learning journey. These are some of the most common fears we have heard:

Making mistakes in grammar or pronunciation: students often worry that their errors will make them sound less intelligent or capable, as if their fluency level represents their overall functioning.
Not being understood: the fear that someone might not understand you can make you hesitant to speak, anticipating the uncomfortable moment that may follow.
Starting a conversation but getting stuck and not knowing the right words – oh no, will your conversation partner be disappointed after your initial strong start?
Receiving corrections from native speakers, even close friends or partners. Corrections can dent your confidence, even though they are meant to be helpful. The same counts for native speakers switching to English.

Remember: all of the fears above are completely normal and part of the learning process. Of course, that doesn’t take away the fact that you would prefer to get rid of it as soon as possible. We’ll discuss how to do that in the rest of this blog:

1. From a fixed mindset to a growth mindset

When a student says they’re afraid to speak Dutch, they most often mean they’re afraid to make mistakes when speaking Dutch. But what if we told you that each mistake is actually valuable? Speaking Dutch requires trial and error, just as anything else you learn that’s new. Adopting an approach where you see mistakes as learning opportunities reflects a growth mindset: you focus on improvement rather than perfection.

Speaking Dutch fluently is not the same as speaking error-free

When you’re afraid to speak Dutch, it’s also good to know that being fluent in a language doesn’t mean being error-free. Instead, it’s about being able to express yourself and being understood. Even native speakers sometimes make mistakes or cannot come up with a word. That does not diminish the fact that they are fluent in the language.

Fluency versus accuracy

Speaking ability (what most people would label fluency) actually consists of two key aspects:

fluency: how smoothly and effortlessly you can speak
accuracy: how correct your speech is

Many learners set the bar too high and focus too much, or even exclusively, on accuracy. But what really matters in the end is getting your message across.

Speaking doesn’t necessarily mean having full conversations

Do you find it exciting to apply your Dutch in everyday conversations? Our advice: challenge yourself, but never push yourself to your limits when you are really dreading it immensely. After all, learning a language cannot be successful if all you experience is stress. Fortunately, you have more than enough options to practice speaking Dutch. Below, we listed a few:

Read Dutch texts aloud. This helps you improve your pronunciation and get used to the sentence structure as well.
Sing along with Dutch songs (or even give karaoke a try!). According to science, singing words and phrases supports foreign language learning. By focusing on the sounds, you’ll also improve your Dutch segmentation (identifying individual sounds in a word) and pronunciation, which will help you develop a more native-like sound.
Narrate your daily tasks out loud in Dutch (e.g. ‘Ik maak nu koffie’, ‘Ik kijk een programma op de televisie’, or ‘Ik wandel door het park’.) By doing this, you turn everyday moments into speaking practice.
Describe objects (or photos, images) around you. With this exercise, you’ll build a better vocabulary and train yourself to form sentences.
Imagine a conversation between you and a store employee, doctor’s assistant, or neighbor. Rehearsals like these boost your confidence in handling common scenarios and prepare you for real-life interactions. 2. Working on your Dutch pronunciation

Although pronunciation plays a crucial role in speaking (and speaking confidence), the influence of pronunciation on overall speaking skills is often underestimated. Have you ever heard someone say ‘Beginners need to focus on grammar’? If so, what they probably mean is that beginners shouldn’t assume a one-to-one correspondence between languages. Of course, they should pay attention to things such as how sentences are constructed coherently in the target language. But that doesn’t mean grammar should be studied at the expense of everything else.

Learning the correct pronunciation of words will ensure that others can understand you. Even if your grammar isn’t perfect, native speakers will still grasp what you’re saying. The more feedback you receive on your pronunciation, the more your skills will improve.

To illustrate, take for example the student who mastered Dutch word order and built up a large vocabulary in a short time. He paid far less attention to his pronunciation, though. This became painfully clear when one day he said:

‘Ik moet mijn hoer betalen’ (I need to pay my prostitute), while he actually meant:

‘Ik moet mijn huur betalen’ (I need to pay my rent).

Long story short: first focus on pronunciation, then on grammar. You’ll also notice that less Dutchies switch to English during conversations when your pronunciation is right.

3. There’s no need to start full conversations immediately, take some small steps first

Did you take swimming lessons as a child? Think back to the first time in the pool. Were you just thrown into the deep end by the instructor? Or, were you given floaties and allowed to slowly go down the steps, and with each step a bit deeper into the water? We assume (and sincerely hope) that the second was the case. When you’re afraid to speak Dutch, use the same approach. Start out easy and gradually build your confidence.

A little psychology

Systematic desensitization, which is a common therapy in psychology applied to fears, among other things, is also effective with learners who are afraid to speak Dutch. With systematic desensitization, you first deal with the situations you find least frightening. If that goes well and you build up confidence, and you move on to the next situation. According to science, speech training with systematic desensitization enhances students’ speaking competence. The graduated exposure part is something you can try to apply yourself. An exposure list could, for example, look like this (number one is the least frightening situation, number 6 is the most difficult situation):

Greeting my neighbor in Dutch.
Asking a store employee a question in Dutch.
Using some Dutch sentences when speaking with friends / Dutch partner.
Order food at a restaurant in Dutch.
Make small talk with a cashier or that fellow dog owner you run into every day.
Call to make an appointment in Dutch.

Of course, this is just an example. Your list can be as long as you want it to be and contain every kind of speaking situation you feel you need to practice with.

By now you’re up to speed on some practical tips and tools to practice your conversation skills (and pronunciation). Earlier we also mentioned that learning a language is a matter of doing. And that making mistakes is part of that. Yet for many, this is not so obvious. Let’s zoom in on that in the next part of this blog.

4. Dealing with forgetting and overthinking

When you’re learning a new language, it’s normal to have moments of hesitation. You might forget a word now and then, or overthink the sentence structure. Understanding why this happens and knowing how to manage these situations can significantly reduce your fear of speaking Dutch.

Oh no! I forgot how to say it!

Relax and make life a little less hard on yourself! Do you ever notice a native speaker freeze when they can’t recall the right word? Probably not. So why should you? Of course, that doesn’t mean you want the conversation to suddenly stop. These strategies might come in handy:

Use filler words/phrases, such as ‘Hoe heet dat ook alweer?’(What’s the name of it again?’), ‘Even denken hoor’ (‘Let me think’), and ‘Hoe kan ik dit zeggen?’ (‘How can I say this?’).
Describe the concept instead, for example ‘dat ding voor de regen’ instead of ‘paraplu’ (umbrella).
Picture words or concepts. Can’t remember the words for ‘scissors’ for a moment? Make a cutting motion with your hand as if holding scissors and everyone will know what you’re talking about.
Practice rephrasing common phrases to build a broader vocabulary. For example, ‘Het is lekker weer’ is a great alternative to ‘Het weer is goed’.
Struggling with grammar? Breaking your sentence down into smaller sentences often helps. Instead of ‘Mijn buurman heeft een auto die al 35 jaar oud is’ (‘My neighbor has a car that’s 35 years old already’) say ‘Mijn buurman heeft een auto. De auto is 35 jaar oud.’ (My neighbor has a car. The car is 35 years old.’)

Overthinking as the cause of your fear to speak Dutch

Stressing out whenever things don’t go the way you planned isn’t of any help. What also isn’t? Overthinking. Contrary to what you might think, it can lead to more pauses and mistakes, and thus frustration. Overthinking goes hand in hand with not wanting to make mistakes, and thus not practicing, which ultimately means you’ll (almost) never actually apply newly learned things. Here are some strategies that might work:

Focus on finishing your sentence and getting your message across instead of making it perfect.
Allow yourself to make small corrections out loud, for example by saying things like ‘Sorry, ik bedoelde ….’ (‘Sorry, I meant …’) or ‘Wacht even, ik zei het verkeerd’ (‘Wait a second, I said it wrong’).
Practice short scripts for everyday scenarios to get familiar with the vocabulary, common phrases and pronunciation. Again, our Praatgraag bundles could be of great help.

5. Regular practice is the way to go when you’re afraid to speak Dutch

Overcoming learning plateaus

At some point in your language learning journey, you may feel stuck, like you’re not making progress. This is called a learning plateau, and while it’s a natural part of the process, it can be frustrating and makes it difficult to stay motivated to learn Dutch.

Progressing in Dutch isn’t always visible

Most students want to learn Dutch fast. But progressing in Dutch is not always a linear journey. Sometimes, it happens beneath the surface, much like the roots of a plant growing underground. You can get quite frustrated by this, because if you make an effort to learn something, you’ll most likely want to see the results of it as soon as possible. During plateau periods like these, it’s important to focus on long-term goals and trust the process. Remember that ‘ah-ha! moment’ in the shower? It proves that your brain is always busy, without you being aware of it. That means, you didn’t stop making progress, but you stopped making visible progress for a short period of time.

Spoiler alert: everyone will face a language learning plateau sooner or later. Although it can occur at any stage, it happens more and more as you progress in Dutch. When reaching an intermediate level, learning naturally slows down. The curve will simply not be as steep as in the beginning. Don’t let that get you down. Instead, try to look at it in a positive way: most of what you need to learn, you have already learned.

The good news is that a language learning plateau is never here to stay. The key to overcoming one is consistency and patience. With the right mindset and strategies, this phase will pass, and you’ll be back to making visible progress in no time.

Don't keep repeating the same

When progress slows down, it’s tempting to stick with what you already know. Many students who dutifully keep reaching for their books turn to repetition. While this makes them feel they’re working on the language, it often leads to stagnation. First, they’re not learning anything new, and second, this makes study sessions very boring. That makes ‘don’t repeat unless necessary’ one of the most underestimated (Dutch) language learning tips. Instead of repeating existing knowledge, challenge yourself by tackling new vocabulary, grammar, or real-life conversations. A tutor can also provide personalized guidance to keep you moving forward.

Note: we are not saying that repetition is never a good idea. Of course it’s smart to repeat material when you no longer have certain knowledge at hand. However, repetition cannot be a solution to get out of a language learning plateau and it definitely won’t help you to learn Dutch fast. On the contrary, your learning curve will only become less steep that way.

Find your intrinsic motivation again

Intrinsic motivation means that you want to achieve something because of an internal, personal reason. This is very different from extrinsic motivation, that is, motivation that makes you want to accomplish something because of external factors. Let’s have a look at an example to make this difference clearer:

Goal: I want to eat a healthier diet

Intrinsic motivation: I want to eat healthier because it gives me more energy during the day.

Extrinsic motivation: I want to eat healthier because my mom said it would be good if I lost some weight.

What do you think: which motivation type best helps this person stick to their healthy eating pattern?

Although the mom’s words may have an impact, the advice to lose weight doesn’t necessarily feel personally and emotionally relevant, because it’s not coming from the person themselves. It works the same way with language goals. Do you find yourself in a language learning plateau? Remember why you started learning Dutch in the first place. Revisit your personal goals and consider how achieving them will impact your life. This reflection can help you to stay motivated while learning the language.

How do you stay motivated while learning Dutch?

Motivation is the driving force behind language learning, but it can fluctuate over time. After all, we’re only human. So, what can you do if you notice that your motivation is in free fall? Here are some proven strategies to stop the downward trend.

3x Why

Digging into the deeper reasons behind your language learning can strengthen your resolve. Ask yourself: Why am I learning Dutch? Then, ask ‘why’ again, and again once more. This exercise helps uncover the true motivations behind your goals, whether it’s career advancement, connecting with loved ones, or feeling confident in daily interactions.

External motivators

Intrinsic motivation is essential, but external motivators can also play a big role. Set deadlines with a tutor, or share your goals with friends or family so they can remind you of them. External accountability adds structure and keeps you on track. In Dutch, we call this ‘een stok achter de deur’ (lit. a stick behind the door). And what about treating yourself to rewards when you reach milestones? A reward can be as simple as that chocolate bar that calls your name every time you open the refrigerator.

Habit stacking

Incorporating language learning into your daily habits makes it more sustainable. Habit stacking is a method where you attach a new habit to an existing one. There’s an interesting phenomenon called synaptic pruning at the root of habit stacking, enabling your brain to conserve resources as it builds connections. It is much easier for your brain to learn two actions that happen simultaneously or sequentially than to learn two actions spread out. Examples of habit stacking are reviewing vocabulary while drinking your morning coffee or listening to Dutch podcasts during your commute.

Find out which motivation technique works best for you

Staying motivated when learning Dutch is not one-size-fits-all. Try different methods to see what works best for you. Whether it’s gamifying your learning with apps, joining a study group, or mixing up your study materials, experimenting keeps things fresh and engaging. Yet, every student knows how difficult it is to step out of their comfort zone. Even those who are the star of the language class and seem to absorb new grammar and vocabulary effortlessly like a sponge can find the change challenging. But by immersing yourself in Dutch situations and practicing with authentic materials, you can bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world and grow your language skills and confidence.

How can I incorporate Dutch into my daily life?

We often hear the question “How much time should I spend learning Dutch every day?” And as you might expect, learning Dutch requires daily commitment and creativity. Fortunately, that does not mean hours of daily studying. A little inventiveness and ten free minutes can go a long way. Chances are, you’re not exactly sure how to go about it. On the other hand, you will also be surprised at how many seemingly meaningless activities can move you forward. Movies, cooking, hobbies, and household items, they can all be of help if you want to learn Dutch from home. Even the smallest practice habits can be meaningful. Research suggests that achieving fluency takes time more than anything else. The easier and more enjoyable you make your learning moments, the longer you’ll stick with it, and the faster you’ll reach your goals.

Practical tips to integrate Dutch into daily life

During your commute to or from work, listen to a Dutch podcast. There are so many of them, you are bound to find a podcast that suits your interests and language level.*
Time to go grocery shopping? Write your grocery list in Dutch. Of course, you can also write other to-do lists in Dutch. So get the post-its out!
Watch Dutch TV shows or the news for immersion in language and culture. Watch the NOS Journaal in Makkelijke Taal, for example. And through the website NPO Start (free) you can watch your favorite programs when it suits you. Note: don’t live in the Netherlands (yet)? From abroad you have limited access to the programs on the website.

Useful tutor tips to practice Dutch daily

Chances are you know many of the programs in your home country really well. When you live abroad, it can be difficult to figure out what suits your interests and level. Sitting down for a program every time only to conclude that it’s not your cup of tea can give you the feeling you’re wasting your time, which can be quite frustrating. A tutor can be of great help here, by recommending personalized resources, such as podcasts or TV shows that match your interests and proficiency level. This will make your Dutch practice sessions more relevant and enjoyable.

Key factor 2: creative ways to improve your Dutch

Off to the next key factor of effective language practice: engaging in creative activities that are interesting and relevant to you. You don’t have to make it harder on yourself than necessary; many of the exercises can be done within the walls of your own home. Here are some creative tips to learn Dutch at home:

If you’re into cooking, recipes can be a great way to help you get more used to the Dutch language. You learn a lot of words for ingredients and actions and, without being aware of it, become increasingly familiar with the Dutch sentence constructions.
Play some Dutch language games, such as crossword puzzles and word search games. Based on the number of stars, you can decide what level of difficulty you want to work with. Again, challenging yourself is good, but stay realistic. If you manage to unravel only two words in half an hour, you’re more likely to throw the word game in the trash than to actually learn something.
Of course, you can also choose to play a fun language-based board game with others, such as:

- 30 seconds (for more advanced Dutch learners)
Label your household items with Dutch words. Again, post-its come in very handy here! Simply write out the target language words on the sticky notes and label items in your home. Join Dutch cultural activities like local markets or meetups. You can usually find an event calendar on your municipality’s website.

Are you taking private Dutch classes with a tutor? Don’t hesitate to ask them for (even more) tips to learn Dutch at home. Thanks to their knowledge and years of experience, tutors can often provide you with useful recommendations. You could think of something simple as themes for expanding your vocabulary, tips on games and other materials you aren’t aware of, or role-playing scenarios to help you prepare for real-life interactions.

Key factor 3: finding Dutch conversation partners

Speaking Dutch regularly is essential for improving fluency. But what are good conversation topics to learn Dutch? And how can you find someone to speak Dutch with? You have several opportunities, for example:

Signing up for a Taalmaatjes/Kletsmaatjes project. You will be paired with a language coach with whom you can practice your Dutch. This is ideal (and usually specifically intended) for those who do not have native speakers around them to speak Dutch with. An example of such a project in Amsterdam can be found here.
Having (simple) conversations with Dutch-speaking friends, family, or colleagues. Tell them you are serious about learning the language and ask them to stick to Dutch.
When it comes to conversations, one of the best tips to practice Dutch is having short conversations with store staff or greeting your neighbor. Even the smallest interactions can help you practice Dutch in daily life and build confidence.

Do the options above still feel like a bridge too far? Then try speaking Dutch to yourself first. Say what you are doing out loud in Dutch, or talk briefly about how your day was. Dutch people switch to English when I talk to them

We would be lying if we said we don’t hear this ‘complaint’ almost daily. When speaking Dutch to a native Dutch speaker, many language learners notice that Dutch people switch to English. While they usually do this to help you, learners often experience it as the exact opposite; completely unhelpful and frustrating. In that case, don’t hesitate to politely remind them. For example, by saying:

“Ik leer Nederlands. Ik wil graag oefenen.” (I’m learning Dutch. I would like to practice)

“Ik wil graag Nederlands spreken.” (I would like to speak Dutch please)

“Kunnen we Nederlands spreken? Ik wil de taal leren.” (Can we speak Dutch? I want to learn the language)

Learning Dutch with AI: a supportive tool or a standalone solution?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a development that can no longer be ignored. In fact, it’s developing at a very rapid pace, and is finding its way into more and more areas of daily life. Among many, this raises the question if learning Dutch with AI is also possible. Or to be more precise, whether learning Dutch with AI is as efficient as the creators of the models would like us to believe. After all, language models are advancing quickly, but how efficient are they?

At Dutch Ready, we are open to any developments that help students learn more effectively, so we decided to dive a little deeper into this topic. In this blog article, we’ll zoom in on AI language learning tools and their advantages and limitations when learning the Dutch language.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Not everyone follows all technological developments closely, so if this is not your area, let us quickly tell you what artificial intelligence is. Artificial Intelligence is a field of study that focuses on creating computer algorithms that can think and act like humans, so they can perform tasks that require human intelligence. Even if you belong to the group of people who are somewhat reluctant to use AI, you are actually using it far more often than you think. Think of everyday applications, such as:

voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant)
predicative texts in apps and search engines
personalized recommendations on Netflix, Spotify, social media, etc.
chatbots in customer service

Deep learning and Large Language Models (LLMs)

To better understand the AI models that claim they can teach you a language, you first need to know what deep learning is. Deep learning is a type of machine learning inspired by the structure and working of the human brain. It learns by analyzing data and identifying patterns without explicit programming. After training, the model can interpret new data and make predictions. The well-known language model ChatGPT is an example of this. GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer.

GPT’s don’t think, they predict

Generative models are specific applications of deep learning that are focused on creating new data. Almost all Large Language Models, i.e. models that are designed to understand human language, to generate human language and to react to it, are GPT’s. What they actually do is nothing more than determine the statistical probability based on an input. In other words, a GPT cannot think, it can only predict based on probabilities determined in the dataset it is trained on.

We probably all agree that we would rather work with a Dutch teacher who knows things and can think than with a teacher who can only make predictions. But let’s not completely depreciate what artificial intelligence can do in teaching Dutch before delving further into this.

Language learning tools: the current state of play, according to science

Recent research on the benefits and challenges of AI-learning tools reveals that there are indeed a number of advantages to learning a language with the help of an AI tool. When used as an addition to the traditional class, the tools can speed up the learning process and be of assistance to personalized learning. According to the same research, however, AI language learning tools cannot fully replace a tutor, because they lack human interaction, personalized feedback and cultural and contextual nuances. Moreover, they have been found to have limited ability to recognize errors, often create errors (also known as hallucinations) and aren’t able to produce original and creative language.

We actually know nothing yet about the long-term effects of learning Dutch with AI

When it comes to using AI-chatbots as a language learning medium, science seems to agree that AI language learning tools need further development and improvement. While chatbots are accessible and can help in reducing a learner’s anxiety, they often lack depth and adaptability. Moreover, their effectiveness is limited, with novelty wearing off over time.

With regard to communication skills specifically, it can be argued that chatbots can contribute to personalized learning experiences with their instant feedback, promoting the development of speaking and listening skills. However, further research is needed to determine the long-term effects. To date, research data is too limited.

Which popular tools are there to learn Dutch with AI?

Before enrolling in our language school for Dutch lessons, most of our students have already learned a few words using the famous green owl. DuoLingo is perhaps one of the best-known examples of AI language learning tools. It’s known for its gamified approach, but certainly no less for its weird phrases. Does ‘natte schildpadden hebben geen dorst’ (wet turtles are not thirsty) ring a bell to you? We are still contemplating in what situation this sentence might serve you well. Also, DuoLingo exercises are quite superficial and lack nuances. Other language learning tools that offer Dutch training are:

ChatGPT and learning Dutch

Because it goes too far to review all of the tools above in this blog, we decided to focus on the world’s most known chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT understands over 100 languages, leading numerous language learners to experiment with it. Free access is available, but you do need the paid version to get the most out of it. We took on the role of a Dutch learner ourselves and conducted some small experiments, practicing with the four classic skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Let’s take a look at the results.

Reading skills

The importance of practicing your reading skills is often underestimated. But the truth is, while reading, you can actually take the time to break down and internalize both grammar and vocabulary. No matter what language you’re learning. When you’re out of reading material, or when you’re unsure about what is suitable for your level, you could ask for the help of ChatGPT. You do that by using a prompt (textual message).

In our experiment, we used this prompt:

I’m a beginner in Dutch and only know the most common 300 words. Summarize the plot of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for me at a level I can understand.

This was ChatGPT’s output:

How did ChatGPT perform in the reading experiment?

Actually, the summary above looks quite good. The text does not contain unnecessarily difficult words and makes use of short sentences. In other words, ChatGPT can be of added value when practicing your reading skills. However, keep one thing in mind: when you learn with a tutor, they naturally also quiz you to check if you really understood. Together you can discuss difficulties and tricky words. Do you work with ChatGPT? Then don’t forget to ask the chatbot to quiz you as well. This is the only way to be sure that you really understood the text.

Writing skills

Let’s move on to the next possibility that ChatGPT offers you. When you’re learning Dutch with AI, you also need writing practice. For many students, writing is the least favorite part of learning a new language. A simple example is to write a piece of text and ask ChatGPT to correct it for you, using the prompt ‘Check this Dutch for me’.

In our experiment, we asked ChatGPT to correct this text (the underlined words are incorrect):

Ik heb een grote familie. Mijn ouderen heten Maria en Pedro en zijn 55 en 58 jaar oud. Ik heb ook een broer, hij Stefan heet en is 24 jaar oud. Iedereen wonen in Portugal. Mijn grootmoeder woont ook in Portugal en is 84 jaar oud. Ze is de moeder van mijn moeder. Mijn moeder heeft twee zussen, Dolores en Lourdes en hebben twee kinderen. Mijn vader heeft een jongere broer, maar hij heeft twee kinderen: een jongen en een mesje. Ze zijn mijn neef en nicht. Mijn neef is ouder van mij en mijn nicht is jongere.

How did ChatGPT perform in the writing experiment?

ChatGPT was able to correct all the mistakes in the written text and rewrote it flawlessly. What it doesn’t do, is explain to you why it does what it does. In other words, you don’t get any feedback on grammar, spelling, and word use. If it’s not clear to you why a mistake was actually a mistake, you can ask ChatGPT for clarification. We asked the model why it corrected ‘mijn nicht is jongere’ (the last words of the text) into ‘mijn nicht is jonger’. It gave us this answer:

Translation: Why incorrect? The word ‘jongere’ is a noun and means a young person (often a teenager), not an adjective. In this context, you want to use an adjective: ‘jonger’. Correction: The correct sentence is ‘Mijn nicht is jonger’. Here you use the adjective ‘jonger’, that belongs to the comparison.

Although ‘jongere’ is indeed also a noun, this is no explanation that helps us any further. Looking at how you composed the rest of the sentence, a tutor would have understood that it was your intention to use an adjective, not a noun. Your tutor also would have told you that the mistake lies in the fact that the adjective was written with an -e at the end, which we don’t do in Dutch when an adjective comes after the noun. ChatGPT’s explanation didn’t clarify that at all, meaning you’ll make limited progress.

Listening and speaking skills

When you’re learning Dutch, whether that’s with AI or or without, you’ll definitely want to work on your listening and speaking skills to be able to have daily conversations in Dutch. Could ChatGPT be of any help here? Of course we tried this out as well. To have conversations with ChatGPT, you’ll have to activate the advanced speech mode, which lets you choose from several voices. Instead of writing a prompt, now you speak to ChatGPT. A good spoken prompt could be:

‘I want to speak with you to practice my Dutch. Can we chat at a B1 level?’

The voice you chose will then invite you to tell it what you would like to talk about. We replied with ‘Hallo, kunnen we over katten praten?’ (Hello, can we talk about cats?)

ChatGPT replied to us with:

Hallo! Helaas kan ik niet direct met katten praten, maar ik kan je wel helpen met allerlei tips en informatie over katten! Wat zou je willen weten?
(Hello, unfortunately I can’t talk to cats directly, but I can help you with all kinds of tips and information about cats! What would you like to know?)

ChatGPT seemed to be a bit confused about prepositions here. ‘Praten over katten’ means ‘talking about cats’, and ‘praten met katten’ means ‘talking with cats’. Although ChatGPT’s reaction doesn’t cause a huge problem, it was at least a little funny.

How did ChatGPT perform in the listening and speaking experiment?

We then held a short conversation, in which a few things stood out:

The voices used are clear, but sound robotic. Speaking with ChatGPT definitely feels like speaking with AI instead of a real person. That means you don’t feel the connection you feel with a real conversation partner.
The emphasis is not always in the right place, while that’s essential to understand and convey the nuances of a message.
Some slight mistakes in pronunciation were made. For example, the first greeting ‘hallo’ sounded like the English ‘hello’ and instead of the Dutch word ‘of’, the English ‘if’ was audible. Remarkably, those errors were not visible in the written out script of the conversation that we got presented when we ended it. Pronunciation errors can be hard to unlearn and are often one of the biggest sources of miscommunication when learning.
Sometimes, ChatGPT may need some time to generate its answer. That may feel a bit unnatural.

Of course, we have only had a few brief conversations and cannot draw any firm conclusions. However, it is often said that the chats are generally a bit shallow. That doesn’t mean they’re useless, but it’s best to use them for short, simple practice. They could lose their value as you progress in learning Dutch. On the other hand, all the voices speak with the speed of a native speaker. That makes it more difficult for beginners.

The benefits of conversation practice with a tutor

Some students admit they feel a bit awkward in the beginning when starting online private Dutch lessons. Even though you know your tutor doesn’t expect you to have the skills of a native speaker, performance anxiety can play tricks on you. But that’s perfectly normal. Be aware of incorrect responses when learning Dutch with AI

It is well known that ChatGPT can give incorrect, biased or sometimes even offensive responses. In most cases, that’s the result of incomplete, outdated or biased training data. As you may know, ChatGPT is trained using information on the internet. And anyone with a keyboard and an internet connection can post information online. When a piece of misinformation occurs often enough, ChatGPT sees it as a valid pattern, and this leads to inaccuracies in its responses.

Furthermore, as ChatGPT essentially predicts the next part of a text, its predictions can simply be wrong. This means there will always be the risk of errors in output.

A tutor’s mindfulness of your cultural and personal values

Another negative consequence of the datasets used to train AI models: lack of proportional representation of different cultural, gender, or socioeconomic backgrounds.. When the output of the model does not match your religious, cultural or personal views, this can make you feel unaddressed or misunderstood as a learner and hinder the communication with the model. Needless to say, this doesn’t make your learning journey any more pleasurable.

How to improve your Dutch pronunciation?

When learning a language, pronunciation is one of the most important aspects to master. And Dutch is no exception to that. When you improve your Dutch pronunciation, you will make the difference between inefficient communication and a good conversation. Moreover, mastering pronunciation also means a boost in self-confidence and Dutchies being less likely to switch to English in conversation. How difficult is Dutch pronunciation really?

How difficult a language is depends, among other things, on which languages you speak. The more the languages are similar, the easier it will be. For example, if you speak only Chinese, it will be a lot harder for you to practice and improve your Dutch pronunciation than if you (also) speak English. This also applies specifically to pronunciation. Do you speak English and/or German, or any of the other languages which, like Dutch, belong to the Germanic language family? Then it immediately becomes a lot easier for you.

Even the notorious Dutch g/ch sound, which to some sounds like choking, is actually quite common in some other languages. You can find it in words such as ‘jarrón’ (vase in Spanish), ‘хата’ (house in Russian), ‘góra’ (up in Polish), or even ‘Loch Ness’ (a well-known lake, in English).

Understanding Dutch phonetics

Especially for English speakers it is not too difficult to improve their Dutch pronunciation. Of course, that does not mean that it is always a walk in the park. Most learners find guttural sounds (the sounds made at the back of the throat, such as the g) quite a challenge, as well as some diphthongs such as eu and au and so-called pseudo diphthongs such as oei and eeu. We’ll come back to those troublemakers in a moment.
We do want to tell you one thing already: don’t let those ‘difficult’ sounds discourage you. Many students who skip pronunciation practice feel afraid to speak Dutch later on.

By the way, in this blog we take English as a starting point for comparison with the Dutch phonetic system because almost every expat masters this language. Dutch is a phonetic language

Like English, Dutch uses the Latin alphabet. So there’s no need to learn new characters. A second nice feature of our language is that it is quite phonetic. By this we mean that there is a strong relationship between spelling and pronunciation. In other words, once you are familiar with the sounds, you can easily deduce the pronunciation of a word from its spelling. This is much easier than in other languages like English or French, which are a lot less phonetically consistent. Just take the ea combination in English, which can be pronounced in numerous different ways:

Hear how the combination ei sounds the same in all words? No hidden surprises! So, when you improve your Dutch pronunciation by learning what each combination sounds like first, then you have already taken one of the first big steps.

Dutch vowels and consonants

All right, back to the Dutch alphabet and pronunciation. You can rejoice in the fact that the alphabet is the same one used in English. So that means 26 different letters, divided into vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and consonants. Let’s briefly review both vowels and consonants below.

Short and long vowels

If we take a look at the five separate vowels (a, e, i, o, u), we can say that they are often challenging for quite a few non-native speakers. This is because Dutch has more vowel sounds than many other languages. First off, in Dutch, we distinguish between short and long vowels. A single vowel is pronounced short, as for example in ‘bal‘ (ball), while double vowels, as in ‘kaas‘ (cheese), are pronounced long.

At first glance, perhaps nothing strange. But even a single vowel is often pronounced as a long vowel, for example, in words like ‘maken‘ (to make). Listen below how the words are pronounced:

Let’s take a look at another example:

The single a in ‘maken’ sounds the same as the double aa in ‘maan’. This is due to a phenomenon that we at Dutch Ready call sound stability. The way we pronounce a vowel depends on the letters that come after it and the way words are split into syllables. It is something that is not covered in most Dutch pronunciation dictionaries, even though it is essential to get a good Dutch accent. Our Dutch Ready Pronunciation and Spelling Module therefore not only teaches you everything about the pronunciation of all Dutch sounds in itself, but also about when this phenomenon of sound stability occurs and why.

Vowel combinations

So Dutch has 5 different vowels (which can be pronounced long or short), but it doesn’t stop there, because we also have many vowel combinations, consisting of two or three vowels. These are pronounced (more or less) as one vowel: au, ei, eu, ie, ij, oe, ou, ui, aai, oei, ewe, ieu, eeu. Sometimes you also encounter ae, ai or oi, for example, in Mr. Spaenders, mais and hoi. These are all fixed combinations, with their own unique sound that you have to learn by heart. Luckily, once you know what each combination sounds like you won’t run into any surprises later. Consonants

If you want to sound more Dutch, then of course the consonants also need your attentian. Most Dutch consonants are pronounced roughly in the same way as English. Yet, also more than enough differences can be identified, such as:

In Dutch, the g is a guttural sound, that is, a sound made at the back of the throat. The same goes for the ch and the sch sound. So that explains the ‘hard’ g that Dutch is so famous (or infamous?) for.
The v is sometimes pronounced as f in Dutch, depending on exactly where it is in a word.
Dutch often applies the phenomenon of ‘sharpening of the end sound’. This means that a voiceless consonant at the end of a word is pronounced as voiced. For example, the word ‘hond’ sounds like ‘hont’.
Dutch speakers pronounce the r much more strongly than English speakers. Moreover, there are also different ways of pronouncing that letter, depending on its position in a word.

The most challenging Dutch sounds and how to pronounce them

A major learning goal of many students who enroll with us is to improve their Dutch pronunciation. We know from experience that a number of sounds can be a bit more challenging for a large proportion of learners. These include:

How could it be otherwise: the ‘hard’ g, a guttural sound made in the back of the throat: “Goedemorgen, ga je vandaag nog naar Groningen?” (“Good morning, are you still going to Groningen today?”)

Winkel / markt

We already gave you a quick tip, but don’t worry too much about that if you can’t master it. While in Groningen itself they use the ‘hard’ g a lot, in the southern part of the Netherlands they pronounce it much softer. Besides, with the right guidance, you’ll master this sound in no time! The r: depending on the place of r in a word, but also on the region, this letter is pronounced rolled or at the back of the mouth.
The diphthong ui: this combination does not occur in many other languages, which often makes it difficult to pronounce at first. The ui sound requires your mouth to be slightly open. The sound starts with the mouth shape of the short u sound and from the short u sound you continue to the long uu sound and then the j sound. The sound remains at the front of your mouth.
The uu: you can practice the pronunciation of this Dutch long vowel, that is made at the front of the mouth, by making your mouth very small. Just purse your lips, as if you were drinking from a straw.

A mistake in pronunciation can sometimes confuse a native speaker. Occasionally, however, it can also lead to a difference in meaning, sometimes resulting in hilarity. The best thing you can do then? Simply, shrug your shoulders and laugh.

Common mistakes in Dutch pronunciation

Have you ever heard any of these pronunciation mistakes or perhaps made them yourself?

Oe sound instead of uu sound: “Vandaag gaan we koffie drinken bij de boeren” (“Today, we will have coffee with the farmers”) instead of “Vandaag gaan we koffie drinken bij de buren” (“Today, we will have coffee with the neighbors”).
And in the same category, “Ik moet mijn hoer nog betalen” (“I still have to pay my prostitute”) instead of “Ik moet mijn huur nog betalen” (“I still have to pay my rent”).
Confusion between short and long vowels, such as a and aa: “De maan draagt vandaag een mooi pak en een stropdas” (“Today, the moon is wearing a nice suit and a tie”) instead of “De man draagt vandaag een mooi pak en een stropdas” (“Today, the man is wearing a nice suit and a tie”)
Confusion between i and ie: “Ik eet vies met aardappelen“ (”I eat gross with potatoes“) instead of “Ik eet vis met aardappelen” (”I eat fish with potatoes”).

Dé redenen om Nederlandse lessen aan expats aan te bieden

In de globaliserende wereld van vandaag de dag is effectieve communicatie de basis voor succes. Steeds meer bedrijven breiden uit en omarmen diversiteit. En juist dat maakt het belangrijker om vloeiend in de lokale taal te kunnen communiceren. Voor werkgevers in Nederland is investeren in Nederlandse lessen voor expats niet alleen een vriendelijk gebaar; het is een keuze waarmee je onder andere de samenwerking kan verbeteren, de moraal van werknemers kan stimuleren en de algehele prestaties van je organisatie kan bevorderen. Zelfs in een multiculturele en expatvriendelijke omgeving groeit de vraag naar Nederlandse taalvaardigheid.

Dat, in combinatie met de ongemakkelijke stiltes die hieruit voortvloeien, leidt ertoe dat haar boodschap totaal niet overkomt.

Expats geven hun taalbehoeften niet altijd aan

Situaties als deze zijn onprettig voor alle betrokken partijen. Jamila zou, zeker in deze situatie, niets liever willen dan vloeiend Nederlands kunnen spreken. De waarheid is dat ze veel werknemers van diverse culturele achtergronden vertegenwoordigt die het vaak moeilijk vinden om hun behoeften hardop uit te spreken. Het bij de werkgever vragen naar de mogelijkheid van taallessen Nederlands is daar een voorbeeld van. Expats wennen vaak dan wel langzaam maar zeker aan de typisch Nederlandse directheid en werkcultuur, maar het uiten van hun eigen wensen en behoeften voelt vaak net een stapje te ver. Alhoewel expats een groeiende druk voelen om Nederlands te spreken, blijft de angst om ‘te veel te vragen’ groter. Dat leidt ertoe dat velen dat uiteindelijk niet doen.

Waarom zou je kiezen voor Nederlandse lessen voor expats?

Het is overduidelijk hoe Nederlandse taallessen Jamila’s carrière kunnen bevorderen. Ze zullen haar helpen met haar zelfvertrouwen, groei en de professionele kansen die ze ongetwijfeld voor ogen heeft. Wanneer je ze ernaar vraagt, erkennen veel expats dat ze zich ietwat geïsoleerd voelen, vooral wanneer ze net zijn geëmigreerd. Als werkgever kun je een gevoel van verbinding op verschillende manieren stimuleren. Bijvoorbeeld door Nederlandse lessen aan je buitenlandse werknemers aan te bieden. Al vanaf CEFR-taalniveau A2 is een werknemer in staat om eenvoudige gesprekken over het dagelijks leven te voeren. Een gesprekje met collega’s bij het koffieapparaat over hobby’s, familie of het afgelopen weekend? Dat is dan ineens niet meer zo angstaanjagend. Behalve de communicatie met collega’s en tussen teams verbetert ook de communicatie met klanten. Tot slot wordt het voor een expat met A2-niveau makkelijker om (eenvoudige) werkinstructies en documenten te begrijpen.

Betere taalvaardigheden, een sterker team

Expats die verder leren op hogere CEFR-niveaus, zoals B1 of B2, kunnen ook complexere werkgerelateerde taken met vertrouwen aan. Ze kunnen actief deelnemen aan vergaderingen, constructieve feedback geven en gedetailleerde documenten of beleidslijnen begrijpen. Dit verbetert hun individuele prestaties, maar ook die van het hele team. Investeren in Nederlandse lessen voor expats levert je zo een efficiënter en meer verbonden team op. Alhoewel Nederland hoog scoort op de English Proficiency Index (EPI), betekent dat niet dat iedereen even goed Engels spreekt En zelfs wanneer klanten wel (vloeiend) Engels spreken, vinden de meesten het nog steeds een stuk prettiger om zich in hun moedertaal te uiten. Daarnaast toont een expat die Nederlands met klanten spreekt zijn goede wil én laat hij zien zich in te zetten voor een goede samenwerking. Dat draagt bij aan de vertrouwensband tussen beide partijen en sterke klantrelaties.

Groepslessen Nederlands voor expats: traditionele lessen in een klaslokaal versus online lessen

Overweeg je in-company lessen Nederlands voor jouw expatwerknemers? Dan heb je de keuze tussen de ‘traditionele’ lesvorm in een klaslokaal en online leervormen. Voor werknemers die (gedeeltelijk) op afstand werken of wisselende werkprogramma’s hebben, zijn online lessen aantrekkelijk. Privélessen Nederlands maken het mogelijk voor een docent om persoonlijke aandacht en instructies op maat te geven. Deze zijn geheel aangepast aan de behoeften en doelen van de leerder zelf. In een (face to face of online) één-op-éénsetting kan de docent ook het tempo van de lessen aanpassen, extra bij specifieke moeilijkheden stilstaan en de leerder van directe feedback voorzien. Dat alles draagt bij aan een optimale leerervaring.

Wat moet je kiezen: in-company lessen Nederlands voor je team of één-op-éénlessen?

Eén-op-éénlessen leveren vooral resultaat op wanneer een werknemer intensievere begeleiding nodig heeft. Zo kan een gepersonaliseerd plan van aanpak worden gehanteerd. Individuele lessen leveren doorgaans ook sneller resultaat op, mede omdat ze kunnen worden aangepast aan voor de werknemer relevante thema’s en de eigen moedertaal. We bieden aan het begin van de cursus een persoonlijke intake en niveautoetsing aan (en gedurende de cursus op verzoek). Een certificaat van deelname kunnen we indien gewenst ook verstrekken.
