Can you learn Dutch by yourself?

“Dutch is way too hard. You really can’t learn it without a teacher.” If you’re an expat in the Netherlands, you’ve probably heard it more than once, and it may have taken the wind out of your sails immediately. Because what if you don’t have the time or the means to start Dutch lessons right now? Can you actually learn Dutch by yourself?

The wrong start can make you think Dutch is impossible

To find the answer to the question ‘Can you learn Dutch by yourself?’, most expats decide on trying an app and binging some YouTube videos. But once they stall after a couple of weeks (and that’s more of a rule rather than an exception), they conclude that self-study doesn’t work for them. It’s a huge pity that one wrong choice early on causes so many expats to give up right away, because the actual answer to the question is: “Yes, you can learn Dutch by yourself.”

Self-study doesn't have to mean you're studying without guidance

Learning Dutch by yourself is absolutely possible, and reaching A2 level (solid, everyday Dutch) is realistic. But only -and this is an important prerequisite- if you follow a clear system instead of using a pile of random tools. Moreover, we should redefine what ‘by yourself’ means. Without a private teacher isn’t the same as completely without guidance. What the right self-study Dutch actually entails, is:

  • learning without a fixed weekly classroom
  • driving your own study time
  • following a step-by-step roadmap with built-in feedback points

The Dutch Ready Academy: a complete self-study platform to get to level A2

This is exactly what we built the Dutch Ready Academy for: a complete self-study system that gets you from zero to level A2 by using a clear curriculum. Moreover, you can join live Q&A sessions twice a month, and of course, it’s always possible to add private online Dutch lessons when needed. Finally, you’re learning Dutch on your own, but aren’t guessing anymore. Can you learn Dutch by yourself? This way, definitely.

What does Dutch level A2 actually give you?

Many Dutch learners report that, after reaching A2 with a mix of self-study and light support, they feel they can function in Dutch and feel at home. The learning challenges they faced in the past never had to do with talent, but with a lack of a plan. At A2 level, you can communicate in simple and routine situations. You’re able to talk about familiar topics, understand straightforward texts and conversations, and express basic needs and opinions using simple language. For example, you can:

  • handle basics at the supermarket, GP, municipality, and school
  • have small talk about work, hobbies, and your weekend
  • read simple emails and letters and know what’s going on

Self-study Dutch: what usually goes wrong

But let’s go back to all those failed attempts for a bit, which you may have experienced yourself. Most of them look something like this:

  • Duolingo streaks for a few weeks, but then…. nothing.
  • A random grammar book abandoned around chapter 3.
  • YouTube videos that feel either like children’s TV or rocket science.

Most Dutch language learners who come to us report missing structure when they study Dutch independently. They have no idea what to do first, next, or later. Besides that, words and rules (without clear explanations) appear once and vanish, and there are no opportunities to actually use the language, i.e. speak or write Dutch. And last but not least, many people with a busy schedule need some kind of accountability. Unfortunately, a random grammar book or YouTube channel doesn’t notice when you slack off. It doesn’t take much for this kind of ‘self-study’ to fail.

What makes a Dutch self-study course actually work?

To make ‘learn Dutch by yourself’ work in the real world, you need four ingredients:

1. A roadmap to your target level

2.Built-in feedback and checkpoints

3. Practical tools for real life

4.Developed for busy people

The Dutch Ready Academy is built around all four. Let’s take a closer look at them.

1. A roadmap to Dutch level A2

You shouldn’t have to design your own Dutch self-study course. A good system tells you to start with sounds and pronunciation, build core sentences for daily life, add the key grammar patterns in a logical order, practice with real-life dialogues and reading, and -if needed- train exam-style tasks for A2. In the Dutch Ready Academy, this becomes tangible through structured e-learning modules, CEFR-based roadmaps that help you identify where you are, graded reading stories, and a grammar trainer that drills what actually matters. Instead of asking yourself “What should I do today?”, you open the Dutch Ready Academy and follow the next step.

2. Built-in feedback and checkpoints

When you learn Dutch completely on your own, you may not always notice when you’re making mistakes. If you repeat errors (whether in pronunciation, grammar, or word choice) over and over, your brain starts to treat it as correct. That process is also called fossilization. To prevent this, an annual subscription to the Dutch Ready Academy includes two live Q&A sessions per month to ask your questions, practice communication, and get unstuck. Of course, you can also use the A1 and A2 practice exams to test yourself, or add online Dutch lessons with a private tutor if you’re on a tight deadline or have specific challenges.

3. Practical tools for real life

You probably know the feeling: you rack up one streak after another on a language app, but when you’re asked a question in Dutch later that day, you’re at a loss for words. Apps are a great way to gamify vocabulary, but they’re not designed to get you through a GP appointment or a team meeting. The Dutch Ready Academy focuses on real-world use of Dutch, offering:

  • Speaking scripts for typical situations (borrel, school, workplace, GP office)
  • Pronunciation videos and sound sheets to practice the trickiest Dutch sounds
  • Reading stories full of vocabulary and natural language, as used in daily life

Need to visit the GP tomorrow? Open the health-related speaking script, and practice the questions and answers you’ll need. That’s self-study with a direct pay-off in your day-to-day life!

4. Built for busy expats

Classic group courses assume you’re free two evenings a week at fixed times. But in reality, you’re still stuck in traffic, you need to stop by the supermarket because you didn’t have time for that yesterday either, or you want to tuck your kids in and read them a bedtime story. Our Dutch Ready Academy is designed to work in short 15-30 minute blocks, is accessible on laptop, tablet, or phone, and lets you pause and resume without losing the thread.

Is self-study enough, or should you add 1-on-1 lessons?

Learning Dutch by yourself using our Dutch Ready Academy, is usually enough when your first goal is reaching level A2, you mainly want to manage daily life in Dutch, and you don’t have a hard exam deadline.
Adding private lessons with a Dutch tutor is a smart choice when you have a strict inburgering or visa deadline, need Dutch for presentations, client calls etc., or if you have learning difficulties or strong speaking anxiety. In that case, the Dutch Ready Academy is your foundation, and the private lessons are the accelerator that targets your specific needs.

Of course, you don’t have to pick one forever. You can start studying Dutch independently now, and add a tutor later if needed.
